A NEW bus lane is being created on one of the busiest roads in Hull.

The lines have already been painted on Spring Bank West and signs are currently being installed.

The eastbound bus lane will run between the railway bridge and Walton Street and between Chanterlands Avenue and Hymers Avenue.

Bus companies have been calling for the new lane after identifying the road as a traffic pinch point.

Peter Shipp, chairman of East Yorkshire Motor Services, has welcomed the move.

He said: "Bus lanes help us and this new lane along Spring Bank West will aid us in tackling the problem of delays which is an issue along there.

"The point to remember is that about half the people who come into Hull to shop travel by bus.

"Giving buses a clear passage during times of congestion helps a lot of people and keeps them on time.

"There have been concerns about the rail bridge which is a pinch point but I don't think it will be a problem.

"This has been doing the rounds for some time and it is something we very much welcome."

But Mr Shipp is also urging the council to ensure it polices the bus lanes.

He said: "We have been pressing the council for some time to enforce the bus lanes to keep cars out."

The move will be met with scepticism by motorists who will fear the new bus lane will increase congestion.

But the council says the bus lanes will take into account various traffic movements along the route, such as the high number of left turns on to Chanterlands Avenue, the right turning into Hymers Avenue and the U-turn opposite Pulman Street to proceed eastwards.

The bus lanes will be operational Monday to Saturday, between 7am and 9.30am.

The installation of the road markings for the bus lanes should be completed this week, weather permitting, while the installation of the traffic signs is currently taking place.

Graham Hall, assistant head of service for transport and asset management, said: "This stretch of road was identified as an area that would benefit from a bus lane, which improves journey times for those using public transport in the west of the city."
