Charlie Mullan: Hull KR must stop Danny Brough to topple Giants

THERE was a time not too long ago that trips to Huddersfield were filled with trepidation and fear for Rovers' fans.

Their record was extremely poor at the McAlpine and Galpharm.

Just three points from a possible 12 represented a woeful return for the red and white army which follows their team every week.

Two of those points came back in Rovers' first season in Super League, so last season's 44-26 win at the land of the Giants was well overdue. It was one of two league wins over Huddersfield last season.

But if you can't beat them, sign as many of their players seemed to be the plan for KR.

Six former Giants are now playing for Craig Sandercock at MS3 Craven Park and, with the exception of Graeme Horne, all are named in the squad for Sunday's game at the John Smith's Stadium.

It brings together two of the best kickers around in Michael Dobson and Danny Brough, who have the ability to open a defence in the blink of an eye.

Whoever comes out on top of that duel should be celebrating a win.

Stopping Brough will be top of Sandercock's priority list but that is easier said than done. Brough has the ability to make a defence look silly with one of his clever kicks.

But he can only perform on the back of what his forwards do and with Eorl Crabtree in their pack, Rovers will have their work cut out.

However, Dave Hodgson would love nothing more than to go back to his former club and add to his record haul of tries for a Super League winger.

Hodgson has scored 24 for Rovers in just 27 Super League matches.

It's no surprise he's fourth on Super League's all-time leading try-scoring charts with 161.

Rovers may not have a fully-fit squad to choose from, but they do go into the contest full of confidence following their victory over St Helens last week.

People are also waiting for Huddersfield to implode as they usually do. Their slide down the table last season was spectacular as they lost 13 of their last 16 matches to fall from second to seventh. As yet, there's no sign they will again.

A win will not only keep Rovers in the play-off places, but it will also set them up nicely for next week's Challenge Cup fourth round clash with St Helens at MS3 Craven Park.

With Dale Ferguson featuring against the side he played four games for earlier in the season, the Giants have Rovers to thank for making him a better player. KR will hope he has a bad game today.
