Paul Cooke: Hull FC's subtle changes have made big difference

THERE has been a distinct change in Hull FC's performance over the past fortnight which brought solid wins over both Wakefield and Catalan.

I don't usually buy into the theory of season-defining losses or wins that have such an impact that they change a team's fortunes, but I'm absolutely certain that the derby day defeat hurt Hull FC's players badly.

And I am also sure it made coach Peter Gentle look at how his side were playing and make tweaks to their attacking structures.

First of all, he has ensured he has players playing in their rightful positions, or as near to as possible given injuries.

Richard Horne and Aaron Heremaia are also playing a little more direct as opposed to coming off a running Danny Houghton in their usual standard set up.

I especially liked the Heremaia try against the Wildcats, as he took the ball early and wide, taking on a big middle defender and beating him with footwork before touching down.

It's something we've not seen all season from an FC player, just picking on a defender and backing yourself to create something.

It was more evident in the ball players standing wider from Houghton and being found with a crisp, accurate pass.

This affords Horne and Heremia time to beat inside defenders with just their starting position, and pick the right pass to create a try.

It seems to me that Gentle and his coaching staff, along with some senior players no doubt, have tweaked their attacking style of play.

They try and set up the same starting points in and around the posts, but are now cutting out the length of their hooker's run and replacing it with a pass.

I like this style, as it's giving the halves time and responsibility to pick the right option.

With Salford up next and then an easy Challenge Cup game, FC now have a genuine opportunity to build some real momentum.

I expect them to head into their tough game at home to Wigan Warriors on April 26 with four straight wins behind them.

It comes as Gentle has banned all talk of top-four finishes in his camp, something I'm sure all are taking on board, including owner Adam Pearson.

Outlandish statements like these only serve to heap pressure on a team, and I applaud Gentle for this move, as it lets the players just play their game.
