Paul Cooke: New Hull KR investors should retain Hudgell and Crossland

THERE'S no question that if Neil Hudgell and Rob Crossland do leave Hull KR and walk away, they will go with Rovers' fans owing them a huge gratitude of debt.

I'm certain both can sleep easy knowing they've done everything in their power to make KR a genuine force amongst the game's elite.

They've almost single handedly brought this club from the depths of the lowest leagues to the Super League's top four in 2009.

Rovers are a far more stable club than when they took over, and they've overseen the most major transitional period in the club's recent history. For this they should be applauded.

Knowing your time is up in any sporting arena is a difficult decision, and to admit you've done all you can is not defeatist. It takes real guts to walk away and watch from afar.

It also affords the chance to sit back and reflect on your personal impact on a club for almost a decade.

If I'm completely honest, I don't think either will walk away completely, they are both red and white through and through.

In fact, if I were a potential investor I'd remain adamant that the two remain at the club in some capacity.

It however again rears the ugly head of the game's financial state overall, as Hudgell and Crossland are £500,000 lighter in the pocket every year by keeping the club going. To spend this amount of money each year to stand still is a huge commitment.

As a result of their decision, the word 'merger' has cropped up again this week, something which will never happen.

You can see why the outside world would see it as a solution, as a joint venture is easily sustainable with almost double everything off the field commercially.

But it is never going to happen. Rugby league is a religion in this city.

I'm sure investment will be found for KR, as the opportunity to be a part of rugby league in this city is one I'm sure lots of wealthy people are interested in.
