A CHARITY football match is taking place just days after a popular Hornsea teenager would have celebrated his 17th birthday.

Hull City footballing legends will face a team of Josh Fell's friends in the second family fun day, raising funds for heart screenings.

Josh, a keen Hull City supporter, died from sudden arrhythmia death syndrome in 2011 after a kick-about with friends on Hornsea School's field. He was 15.

His father Rich Fell said the event takes place on Sunday, May 5, at the Hornsea Recreation Club – just four days after his son would have turned 17.

"It will be an emotional day," he said.

"Josh loved Hull City and would have loved to have seen some of his footballing heroes.

"We just planned the one event last year, but it was such a success we decided to organise it again this year, and hopefully even next year."

Five hundred people watched from the sidelines last year as ex-Hull City players took on Felly's United – a team of family friends and Rich's work colleagues.

A youth game between two teams made up of friends of Josh's also took place in an event which raised £3,633 for Cardiac Risk in the Young (Cry).

Rich said: "We were very overwhelmed with how it went last year.

"We didn't expect it to be as popular and expect so many people to attend."

Pete Skipper, who played for Hull City in the 1980s, has helped organise an ex-Tigers team which could include Dean Windass, Ian Ashbee and Adam Lowthorpe.

Mr Skipper said: "It is nice of us to be asked to take part and raise funds for such a worthwhile cause.

"There was a fantastic turnout last year and it was really good.

"It was touch and go as to whether the event would be on in the week leading up to it as it was torrential rain.

"However, it was a great day, the weather was excellent and we raised a lot of money."

This year's event takes place from 10am to 4pm, with the football match kicking off at 11am.

There will also be a performance by the All for One Choir at 1.30pm. The choir, which boasts more than 100 members, recently performed at Hull City Hall with a group of Josh's school friends.

Mr Fell said: "The choir should be really good.

"We also have organised a programme with adverts in it to raise a bit more money and the event is being sponsored by Cranswick."

Since Josh's death, family and friends have raised £41,000 for Cry.

The charity was founded in May 1995 to raise awareness of sudden death syndrome as well as campaigning and lobbying and the provision of its subsidised cardiac screening programme for young people.

The charity also provides counselling and support to bereaved families and individuals who may be diagnosed.

Mr Fell said: "We are still getting inundated with people wanting to raise money in Josh's memory.

"The people we have met have been amazing.

"There are people organising bag packs, beer festivals, charity runs and bike rides."

Entrance costs £1 for adults with children able to attend for 50p.

Mr Fell is looking for prizes for a luxury raffle and is hoping businesses will show their support.
