The cyclist killed during a time trial on the A63 rode into the back of a caravan which had stopped in one of the lanes of traffic, police revealed today.
The 65 year-old man from Selby was taking part in an organised time trial on the dual carriageway on Good Friday, while motorists were heading in and out of the city for the Easter holidays.
Humberside Police say the Landrover Freelander was towing a white Sterling Eccles touring caravan and was stationary in lane one of the A63 when the Selby cyclist rode into the back of it. The man, who has not yet been named, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Accident investigators headed to the scene of the accident, which happened just before 10.40am around three-quarters of a mile from South Cave, and the road was closed until just before 4pm to allow them to examine the scene.
A spokeswoman for Humberside Police said: "Officers would still like to speak to anyone who witnessed the collision or saw the cyclist or caravan immediately prior to the collision."
Anyone with information is asked to contact Humberside Police on the non emergency number 101, referring to log 218 of March 29.
