A HULL motorbike instructor has returned home after training officers in the Brunei Police Force.
Peter Hodgson spent a week with the force after being recruited by the Sultan of Brunei in an attempt to cut road deaths in Asia.
Peter, 61, said it was an "eye-opening experience".
"I was a little bit apprehensive before I went out there because I wasn't sure what to expect," he said.
"The crash and fatality rate is very high in the country and it was initially a bit of a shock just how little training was available but that is why they needed the help.
"It was almost like going back in time 30 or 40 years but the guys responded really well to the work we were doing.
"They drive on the same side of the road and a lot of the road signs are similar, so that was helpful."
Peter, principal of Ideal Driver and Rider Training in Hull, was asked by Brunei health and safety officials to hold a series of seminars on road safety.
He delivered both practical and theory sessions to the motorcycle police officers as well as fire and rescue riders.
He also held a presentation on road safety and training for the director of land transport in Brunei and the Communications Minister.
About 100 people from several motorcycle associations took part in the programme and Peter has now been asked to undertake training with 107 soldiers in the Brunei army.
"I was absolutely delighted to be asked back to help the army," he said.
"We are now looking at when I can go back and as soon as something get it arranged I will pack my bags and go again.
"I genuinely want to help so it is not just a working holiday for me. I got a lot from the trip and knowing that I was helping to save lives was fantastic."
Peter is hoping to travel back to Brunei next month.
