FOR these students Wham! is not about cheesy Eighties pop but work in the community.
Youngsters from Winifred Holtby, Andrew Marvell and Hymers College put their heads and school names together and created the Wham! team to help clean up and renovate gardens at a nursing home.
The pupils have been helping out at Herbert Pollard House, in Stalybridge Avenue, as part of a Leadership for Life project.
It was the brainchild of David Elstone, the former headteacher at Hymers, who wanted to bring schools together and promote leadership and team work.
Bill Marwood, a mentor from Rapid Solicitors, which helped to sponsor the project, said the children had worked hard and been "very enthusiastic".
He said: "There were 18 students all-together who went on a trip to the Lake District last year and then raised funds for community projects in east Hull.
"The six who went to visit Herbert Pollard House were in pairs from each school and organised a lot of events.
"They bag-packed at Morrisons, had a bake sale and did a sponsored walk across the Humber Bridge on a bitterly cold day."
The money paid for garden furniture and paint to make the gardens more comfortable for the elderly residents at the home.
Bill said: "The students planted flowers and bulbs, painted benches and got the furniture at a good price from Sandhill Nurseries near Preston. There was a lot of planning and site visits before the three days of hard work and we took before and after pictures."
Bill said John Gosnald, a retired A&E consultant, was also instrumental in organising the community days.
Students involved included friends Enea Luciano, 15, Jess Lee, 14, Ben Matos-Gois, 14, Dylon Weston, 15 and Jack Took, 15.
Andrew Marvell pupil Sam Oades, 15, of Holderness Road, also worked at the home and said he had learnt valuable life skills.
He said: "The residents all wanted to go in the gardens but they had become run down so they had to stay inside a lot.
"It was a real shame but now they can relax in them and maybe even plant some things of their own.
"It was enjoyable working in the gardens and I'm really proud of what we all achieved throughout the project."
