HULL: Guitar legend Mick Ronson is to be honoured by a special radio show in his memory tonight.
The show – The Man with the Golden Guitar – will air on Radio Two at 10pm as Gary Kemp marks the 20th anniversary of the death of the Hull-born musician with a celebration of his career.
A stellar line-up of musicians including Chrissie Hynde, Tony Visconti, Ian Hunter, Trevor Bolder and Woody Woodmansey explain why Mick was such a crucial figure in British rock 'n' roll.
They will highlight the important contribution Mick made to some of the most acclaimed albums in rock history and why his talent deserves to be celebrated.
Mick rose to fame as lead guitarist and music arranger on David Bowie's albums, The Man Who Sold The World, Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane and Diamond Dogs.
Through his work with Bowie, Mick came to the attention of and subsequently worked with some of the biggest names in rock including Lou Reed, Mott the Hoople and Bob Dylan.
He was a member of Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue live band, and can be seen both on and off-stage in the film of the tour.
In 1982, Mick worked with John Mellencamp on his American Fool album and, in particular, the song Jack & Diane. In 1992, Mick produced Morrissey's album, Your Arsenal and gave his final live performance at The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert.
He died in April 1993 from liver cancer. He was just 46.
NORTH HULL: The mother of a little boy who died of meningitis is renewing her appeal for raffle prizes for a party she organises each year in her son's memory.
Liam Newman, of north Hull, succumbed to the infection in October 2007.
Each year since her son's death, Claire Newman has organised a party in 27th Avenue, with proceeds going to the charity Meningitis UK.
Claire said: "We haven't had any response to appeals for donated raffle prizes. We're getting worried.
"Liam would have turned 13 this year and we want this party to be special."
Last November, scientists revealed they had found a new vaccine, which is set to be licensed for use in the UK called 4CMenB.
