Angus Young: Giving some Welly to Hull's City of Culture bid

Many years ago, in a different life, I was a regular at the Welly. This weekend, the Beverley Road venue is marking its 100th birthday with the first in a series of one-off reunion club nights.

Bank Holiday Sunday will see Sugar Shack and Shaft resume their once-familiar slots on either floor.

Back in the 1980s, Sugar Shack promoter Ragna Gift used to pester the life out of me for a plug in the Mail's weekly music column.

Today, I'm more than happy to plug it in slightly different surroundings.

As she points out, the original Sugar Shack DJs Steve Cobby and Porky B, who will be playing in the club's main room, are still going strong in different guises some 20-odd years on.

Their production and DJing credits are far too lengthy to detail here.

Suffice to say they have both been very busy boys.

And although Steve has had the odd stab at pop stardom over the years, they remain largely anonymous movers and shakers on Hull's music scene. Joining them on Sunday as a guest DJ will be Mark Wigan, curator at the Museum of Club Culture in Humber Street, who has designed the current Sugar Shack poster.

Back in the day, Sugar Shack posters seemed to originate from the do-it-yourself Blue Peter school of sticky-back plastic. Today, they are regarded by some as valued pieces of historic artwork, some featuring in Mark's museum, which is hosting a display of Welly memorabilia as part of an exhibition on nightclubs and fashion and music cults.

If the powers-that-be behind Hull's 2017 City Of Culture bid are looking for a bit of inspiration, I would suggest a trip to the Welly on Sunday night would be a good place to start.

Police called as more than 1,000 people join queue outside stunned Welly Club
