BUILT-UP north Hull would not normally be top of the list of areas involved in agricultural pursuits.
But families are being encouraged to enjoy a spot of the Good Life – by joining an innovative seed-sharing scheme.
Volunteers at the Rainbow Community Garden hope residents will donate spare seeds, which can then be given to others.
Brenda Elm, who has helped out on the garden off Levisham Close for nine years, hopes the scheme will encourage people to lead healthier, greener lives.
She said: "We really hope people take advantage of the scheme.
"These days, people never know where their food comes from but growing it yourself avoids that."
Brenda said it makes perfect sense to swap seeds and skills.
She said: "Quite often, you will get 200 seeds in a large packet – who wants 200 pea plants?
"Volunteers here are also happy to share our knowledge with anyone who wants advice on growing their own food."
Jeanie Webster, the garden's co-ordinator, said volunteers already have a small number of seeds to share.
However, she is hoping to secure funding to buy more to kick-start the scheme.
She said: "We want people to consider growing their own fruit and vegetables in gardens and on windowsills.
"However, we know seeds can be quite expensive – that's why we are starting this scheme.
"This way, people can get two, or maybe even more, types of seeds for the price of one."
Jeanie said people should not be afraid of growing their own produce.
"Most people who give it a go end up with produce at the end of it," she said. "But if they fail, they can always try again.
"Our volunteers are on hand to offer tips and advice."
Besides the obvious health benefits of eating fruit and vegetables, growing your own food also encourages an active lifestyle.
Jeanie said: "It will get you outside into the fresh air and do you the world of good."
Brenda said she would like to see whole families get involved.
"It's a big thing in schools at the moment – kids knowing where their food comes from," she said.
