MOTORISTS are being urged to plan extra time for their journeys as a band of snow edges slowly towards East Yorkshire.

Both Hull and East Riding councils say they are prepared for the wintry weather.

The Met Office expects snow to hit our area in the early hours of tomorrow.

However, it is expected to be light and increasingly falling as sleet in coastal areas.

Holiday-makers are strongly advised to check the status of their flight with their airline. Leeds Bradford Airport has reopened after flights were earlier grounded due to snow, but delays are expected, while Liverpool John Lennon and Manchester airports are all reporting some disruption this morning.

Hazardous driving conditions, due to snow and high winds, can also be expected on the M62.

A number of schools are closed across the country, especially in West Yorkshire and Greater Manchester. Hull City Council said it had gritted roads at 6pm yesterday and monitored conditions throughout the night. A spokeswoman said: "Crews have been out from 9am this morning carrying out precautionary gritting and we will be closely monitoring the situation across the weekend. "Teams are on stand-by if needed."Updated: 9.45am.
