HULL'S tweeting elite are celebrating seven years of the internet site which now has 200 million users worldwide.

From tweets about the so-called "bedroom tax", to updates on the local bus routes and Lord Prescott's humorous observations, the city can't cope without its social media nest.

Each time the city's MPs post a message on the platform, it reaches an audience of thousands of followers.

Since 2006, a number of East Yorkshire stories have gone viral on the site – from Curtis Woodhouse confronting his Twitter troll to the voting count for the new Police and Crime Commissioner for Humberside Police.

Rich Sutherland, a social media manager from The Avenues who uses the Twitter handle @banana_penguin, works on more than 15 accounts, including that of the English Muse café in Newland Avenue.

He said: "It's where people hang out and, for businesses, it's more about the community and meeting people behind the brand.

"More and more people are using it and it's here to stay.

"I have helped out with a few campaigns, including one for mental health, and you can be concise and get the message out.

"Hull Libraries is a great Twitter account and, although they are under pressure, they prove why they are an important part of the community."

People use Twitter to build audiences, chat about their lives, sport and deliver news to the people of Hull.

The Mail's Twitter account @thisishull now has more than 7,000 followers.

Paul Johnson, the Mail's web editor, said: "Twitter, combined with the rise of smartphones, has had a huge impact on the way we report the news.

"Our journalists have thousands of followers and can now reach them almost instantly.

"That means reporting is increasingly in real time and has become much more collaborative.

"A breaking news story might start with a tweet, or we will ask our followers to help us develop a story by sharing information, pictures and opinions.

"Twitter is likely to become an even more powerful tool."
