A MAN who made an "amateurish" attempt to escape from police officers with his hands cuffed behind his back went on the run for two hours.
Terry Robert Maguire, 26, ran away after he was arrested in connection with a disturbance.
Although he was released without charge over the disturbance, he has ended up in court over his bid for freedom.
Giving him a suspended sentence, Recorder Michelle Heeley told him: "What you did was born out of drunken stupidity."
Hull Crown Court heard police were called to a street in Goole after receiving a report of an assault after 10pm on August 20 last year.
Prosecutor Jayne Bryan said: "Maguire was one of a group of males and females and they asked to speak to him away from the group.
"He was arrested and cautioned. They placed him in cuffs and he co-operated with that. He said he had done nothing wrong and they walked him to a nearby police van.
"The group of males started shouting abuse at the police officers because he had been arrested.
"Maguire then ducked down and ran down the road. They gave chase but lost sight of him."
She said police launched a search and Maguire was caught two hours later, still wearing the cuffs behind his back.
Maguire was charged with common assault but the case was dismissed.
He then pleaded guilty to a charge of escape.
His barrister Stephen Robinson said: "This is a serious matter but he was very, very drunk at the time.
"I'm sure you will accept his guilty plea and the amateurish nature of this incident."
Maguire, of Eastgate, Goole, has 36 previous convictions and was previously jailed for four years in 2008 for aggravated burglary.
Recorder Heeley said: "You took the foolish decision to run away from the police.
"The police were not able to find you for another two hours, at which point you were still wearing your handcuffs.
"It was an amateurish attempt to escape. The guidelines say I should impose imprisonment but it is some time since you committed a serious offence."
Maguire has been given a four-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months.
He was also ordered to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work in the community.
