HULL FC fans have shown their support for dep- ressed star Brett Seymour by chanting his name and applauding during last night's match.
Seymour's wife Roseanne revealed the player is battling depression after he crashed his BMW on Sunday night.
Fans at last night's home game against Castleford held a minute's applause and chanted his name during the seventh minute – in honour of his shirt number.
Hundreds of people have joined the Facebook group "Brett Seymour get well soon" to leave messages of support for the player.
Posting in the group, Kieran Smith said: "At seven minutes tonight, let's blow the roof off the KC for Brett. There's only one Brett Seymour."
Reece Cook wrote: "Let's all sing our heads off tonight at the seventh for the one and only Brett Seymour."
Seymour suffered minor injuries and spent a night in hospital after his BMW overturned when he crashed into two parked cars in Itlings Lane, Hessle.
After the accident, Roseanne posted in the Facebook group that he had been suffering from depression.
She wrote: "I'm suffering from severe shock that my husband was so desperate and could attempt such a horrific thing.
"He is getting the help he needs and your support has helped greatly. Depression is a silent killer. I want each and every one of you to know that we feel so grateful to you."
Seymour had been criticised by fans in recent weeks for his performances on the field.
However, since the crash, fans have flooded the Mail with messages of support for the Australian player.
Lee Middleton, who runs The Mighty Black and Whites Facebook page, said: "Regardless of how he has performed, we need to stop all the slating and simply show him how much we care.
"He is an FC player and has obviously put himself under way to much pressure, which has led him to do this. I suggest that in the seventh minute of the Castleford match, we sing his name loud and proud.
"He has had a sketchy history with us and when I read Roseanne's post, it made me feel awful.
"I have slated him myself and now knowing what he has done I am ashamed to say that.
"My message to Brett is I am sincerely sorry for doubting your commitment and for not giving you the backing and support you deserve.
"I lost sight of what was really important in life and to hear about what happened was a shock to say the least. Regardless of what has happened, I will forever more support you and the team.
"I hope you are back in the FC shirt soon and I want you to know that we, the faithful fans, wish you well and we will now support you 100 per cent as you deserve."
Writing on the Facebook group, John Upson said: "Fans can be so fickle, and spout things out which are felt deeply by the players and their families.
"As so many have said, it is only a game and real supporters should actually lift the team even more when its struggling a bit, and never bring people down from behind a keyboard. That's cowardice.
"Brett Seymour has proven himself consistently. Maybe now we have to prove to him and his family that we know he can still do it.
"We get behind him and all the Seymours and let them feel the love and he will pay us back on the pitch, that is for sure."
