THE owner of a Chinese takeaway in Hull has been fined for breaching food hygiene rules after his business scored zero for food hygiene.
Kwok Hang Lau was prosecuted by Hull City Council after he'd been served with a notice to improve hygiene at Chamberlain Chinese Takeaway at 18 Chamberlain Road, east Hull.
Environmental health officers had ordered him to implement a food safety management system covering cleaning, personal hygiene and the correct storage and production of food after his business scored zero out of five on council's food hygiene ratings
However, they discovered there was still no safety system in place during a subsequent visit despite the rating ordering urgent improvements.
Mr Lau admitted two food hygiene offences at Hull Magistrates Court and was fined £300, ordered to pay costs of £944 to Hull City Council and a victim surcharge of £15.
Councillor John Hewitt said: "After the inspection, the Food Hygiene Rating for this shop was zero out of five – Urgent Improvement Necessary. I urge all food businesses to follow the advice of Environmental Health Officers so that food safety is maintained at all times."
Trevor Todd, assistant head of service for public protection, said a food safety management system was fundamental for a business selling food to the public.
He said: "Environmental Health Officers work with food business operators to ensure the safe production of food but when advice is not acted upon they have no alternative to resort to formal action."
