ACADEMY governors who suspended their previous headteacher say the number applying for the vacant post is "a really positive sign".

Cottingham High School's headteacher Elizabeth Logan resigned "for personal and professional reasons" in August, six months after she was suspended following problems at the academy.

Governors refused to say why they had suspended Mrs Logan.

They are now looking to appoint a successor for the post of principal, which has a salary of £86,365 to £100,028.

Nineteen applications have been received for the post, which is currently being covered by acting head Will Jennings.

Vice-chairman of governors Robert Sherratt said: "From 31 expressions of interest, we have had 19 completed applications.

"The quality of the applications is excellent and these have come from across the country."

Mr Sherratt said the governors are very happy with the volume of applications.

Numbers applying for the job appear to be in line with levels seen at other East Riding secondaries such as Beverley Grammar School, where 15 applications were received for a headteacher post last year.

Cottingham's governors have involved teachers, parents and pupils in the recruitment process. Staff, the parents' association and the school council were given their say on the qualities they want to see in a new principal.

Responses to questionnaires were used to draw up a list of characteristics people would like to see in a new principal.

Pupils and staff also met candidates who visited the Harland Way academy last week.

Mr Sherratt said: "Thanks go to staff and students who met the potential applicants when they visited the school informally last week – they made a very positive impact on the candidates, judging by their comments."

Shortlisting will take place this month and the successful candidates will be invited to interview at the academy in January.

Parents are looking for a new principal to help the 1,288-pupil academy build on its potential, following its best GCSE results to date this summer.

One parent said: "I think it's a great opportunity for anyone because it is a good school, doing some great things.

"I would hope there will be candidates who can see the opportunity and what they can do to help the school over- come its difficulties and realise its potential."

Governors have said they are looking to appoint "an inspirational professional, who will provide vision, strong leadership and direction".
