THE region's economy is set for a £100m boost from spending by East Riding Council.
The authority's new capital programme for the coming financial year is in marked contrast to many other councils where similar budgets are being reduced.
Projects currently in design or under way include the upgrade to the A164 between the Humber Bridge and Beverley, a major refurbishment and extension of Haltemprice Leisure Centre in Anlaby and the construction of the new Beverley southern relief road.
The council is also due to start work on a long-awaited multi- million-pound makeover of its Leisure World complex on Bridlington seafront over the next 12 months.
Council leader Councillor Stephen Parnaby said: "Unlike many councils that are seriously reducing capital expenditure, we in the East Riding are continuing to invest in more efficient and improved buildings which allows us to meet some of the revenue budget savings requirements we face.
"This council recognises that maintaining funding for capital investment can reduce revenue costs, improve service provision for residents and create employment opportunities, which is vitally important to local companies and the economy.
"Almost all of our capital programme is delivered by local companies."
Cllr Parnaby said the projects at the two leisure centres in Haltemprice and Bridlington underlined the authority's spend-to-save philosophy.
He said: "The emphasis for new capital investment has been placed on invest-to-save schemes to reduce revenue expenditure in the future.
"In simple terms, by investing in the council's assets and buildings and buildings, reducing fixed and operational costs releases money to be spent on other services which are important to our residents, such as highways maintenance and the dreaded potholes."
He said examples ranged from improving leisure centres to increase potential income to spending an extra £3.7m on flood mitigation schemes across the county.
Cllr Parnaby said the council would also continue to work with other authorities and regional bodies such as the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership to help secure extra external funding from the Government and Europe.
"There is a potential for massive opportunity for this area," said Cllr Parnaby.
"We have and will continue to give our absolute support to new initiatives and new streams of funding."
