Hull City transfer talk, July 14. DJ Campbell, Troy Deeney, Clint Dempsey, Phil Bardsley

Our daily blog of transfer rumours from the press as Hull City prepare for life in the Premier League. So do you think Steve Bruce is a man to bear grudges? Well this one might test him. Across in Blackburn it seems striker DJ Campbell has become available, only two weeks after he was signed on a free. The People says new Blackburn boss Gary Bowyer is happy to let Campbell leave for nothing to free up his reported £1million a year wages. We wonder if Bruce has forgiven Campbell for walking out on a deal to come to the KC last January when Blackburn gazumped their wage offer? Meanwhile, Bowyer is also said to be lining up a £2million bid for Crewe's Max Clayton if prolific striker Jordan Rhodes, long linked to City, is poached. Another man who caught City fans' eyes for the wrong reasons is also being linked to the Tigers. Troy Deeney, who scored a spectacular 20-yard strike when Hull City were beaten by Watford in April, is interesting Bruce according to the Sun on Sunday. Deeney scored 20 goals last season for Watford in 43 games as well as chipping in with 10 assists. He's not without some baggage though. In June 2012 Deeney was jailed for 10-months following a nightclub brawl in which he kicked a student in the head. He was freed after four months and says his spell in prison turned his life around. One piece of good news for City fans is it appears the signing of Steve Harper is imminent. Reports from the North-East suggest the former Newcastle keeper will be in Hull tomorrow for a medical. Some interesting news from Glasgow. Celtic manager Neil Lennon admits Gary Hooper may have played his last game for the Hoops after the former Scunthorpe striker failed to appear during their 3-0 defeat by Union Berlin on Friday, reports the Sunday Express. "It will be difficult to convince Gary to stay," said Lennon. The Mail on Sunday say QPR seem to be first in-line for Hooper's signature after Steve Bruce cooled his interest over Celtic's transfer demands. Meanwhile the People say Bruce is keeping close tabs on his former club Sunderland with three players Phil Bardsley, Jack Colback and Lee Cattermole all available as Paolo Di Canio rings the changes. Di Canio would probably drive Bardsley to Hull. He left him in Sunderland to train with the kids while Sunderland headed to Italy for pre-season training.Crazy Twitter talk? If his pockets were only a little deeper, Steve Bruce might be tempted by this rumour. Spurs are willing to listen to offers for American striker Clint Dempsey apparently. But a minimum of £6million and big wages would be out of the Tigers' reach. Wouldn't they?July 13 We can finally kill off one persistent rumour today. Hull City have dropped any interest they may have had in South African striker Katlego Mphela. It appears Mphela rumours were all all one-way. City made no approach but the South African international has been offered around several English clubs - including the Tigers. So, don't expect any move for the Mamelodi Sundowns striker as Bruce continues his hunt closer to home. Yesterday, we asked if Bruce might look at a reunion with Arsenal's Nicklas Bendtner. Today, The Sun says the City boss is ready to do a deal over the Danish international's £52,000-a-week wages because he will cost £2m less than the fee agreed for Charlie Austin. Bendtner was on loan at Juventus last season and was due to move to Eintract Frankfurt this summer - but a £3m transfer has fallen through. Bruce knows the 25-year-old from season-long loan spells at Birmingham and Sunderland and can guarantee the perpetual bench-warmer - whose fine goal-scoring record for Denmark has not yet been replicated at domestic level - first-team football. Brighton striker Ashley Barnes is also in the frame for a KC move, according to Sky Sports. The 23-year-old has establised himself as one of the Championship's rising stars, with 14 goals in 2011-12 and nine last season, despite missing seven games through suspension. Newcastle's colourful director of football Joe Kinnear is ready to wrap up a move for Darren Bent. Today's Mirror claims Aston Villa are ready to soften their hard-line stance over an £8m transfer fee. And former target Gary Hooper now looks likely to go to either Norwich or QPR after Celtic boss Neil Lennon admitted the striker had probably played his last game at Parkhead. Quoted in the Daily Record, Lennon says: "Has he played his last game for Celtic? Never say never but it's looking more and more that way." Away from strikers and City are hoping to tie-up a deal for former Newcastle goalkeeper Steve Harper. As we revealed last week, the veteran stopper is ready to extend his Premier League career for one more season. Meanwhile, Cardiff are keen on Sunderland midfielder Jack Colback - also linked with the Tigers - according to the Daily Mail. Crazy Twitter talk: Okay, it's not a transfer rumour, but here's one leftfield explanation for the Hull City Tigers name switch speculation. Apparently, it all stems from slacker rock band Pavement owning a racehorse called Hull City Tiger. The Californian band's front man Stephen Malkmus is a self-confessed City fan.July 12 Striking options are getting a little thin on the ground now for Hull City as various targets disappear over the horizon. But one name which could again come into the frame is Nicklas Bendtner. The Arsenal striker was finalising a move to Eintracht Frankfurt but that has now collapsed, according to various media including Sky Sports and the Daily Mail. That means one of the Premier League's most experienced – and confident – strikers is still available and the £3million price tag may turn Steve Bruce's head. It's £1.5 million less than the fee agreed for Charlie Austin. The problem will be Bendtner's wages – which Frankfurt couldn't meet. If Bruce thinks he can make a saving on the transfer fee that might free up some cash for wages – but for a season or two, not under a long term contract. But Bruce is an admirer of Bentdner, bringing him in for loan spells at Birmingham and Sunderland so it's one to watch. Charlie Austin is now being trailed by Reading according to the Daily Star. And after the collapse of his move to Hull City, his price tag has dropped to £2.5million. What a difference a week makes in football. Meanwhile, Hull City have been playing down speculation linking the Tigers with Mamelodi Sundowns striker Katlego Mphela. A club spokesman told the South African website Soccer Laduma that no formal discussion has taken place to indicate he is a target. He said: "The coach might have mentioned a while back that he likes him as a striker, but there's no sort of a deal that's been concluded. Yes, we do need a striker, so I think it's a case of jumping ahead of time on this time. It could well be the case that we are looking at him as a possible signing, but at the moment nothing is happening." Interesting. Another one slipping off Hull's radar, Celtic's Gary Hooper, is now attracting interest from Harry Redknapp at QPR according to the Scotsman in Edinburgh and the Sun. Bruce said he had given up interest after Celtic insisted ion holding out for around £7million. Now Harry has admitted he likes the look of Hooper and is "leaving the res to our chief executive". The Daily Mail also reports the link, suggesting that QPR may be offering £5million. And the Daily Mail reports Carlton Cole is now in talks with Turkish outfit Kasimpasa, as reported here yesterday, with City, Crystal Palace and QPR's interest all waning. One formerly linked with City who looks almost certain to find a different club is Spurs midfielder Tom Huddleston. The Times reports that the midfielder is in talks with Sunderland after Spurs accepted a £5million offer. One who's link to City is building is keeper Steve Harper. After our man Phil Buckingham broke the story of the former Newcastle man being approached by City, the Daily Star also reports the Tigers' interest. No Crazy Twitter talk today - you're all tweeting about Hull City Tigers (!) but how about we leave you with an indication of what happens when you stay up in the Premier League...Swansea sign striker and former Liverpool target Wilfried Bony for £12 million and Southampton sign Celtic's midfield star Victor Wanyama for £12.5million. Both deals are around the same as Steve Bruce's total transfer pot for his first summer signings.

A COUPLE woke up to find flames leaping up in front of their house after their car was torched. Ricardo Cortes and his wife Sophia were in bed when they heard a loud bang in the early hours of Sunday and rushed to their window. They saw their small Citroen AX car was on fire in Duesbury Street off Princes Avenue and neighbours phoned the fire brigade at about 4.30am. Sophia, 73, said: "I've had it for a lot of years but I've looked after it and I was just hysterical when I saw the flames. "It had been broken into three months before but this time someone set fire to it and it's absolutely gutted. "My husband has early onset Alzheimer's and I used it to take him to hospital appointments, I'm very upset about all of this. "The fire brigade came quite quickly and the police stayed for more than an hour to speak to my husband and I. "I was very concerned because I don't have any enemies and I'm nice to everyone down the street, I can't understand it." Sophia said she'd recently had a new exhaust fitted and bought items for her car such as screen wash, which were in the boot. "It all just exploded and there was a pair of Hunter Wellington boots in the car which my daughter had bought me for Christmas," she said. "We've had a few problems down the street but I've lived here for years and I don't see why I should have to move. "One of the houses looks awful, but I have a lovely home and I like the area." Sophia is urging residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious or anti-social behaviour in Duesbury Street. Humberside Fire and Rescue Service are investigating the fire but Sophia says it was "without a doubt" an arson attack. Anyone with information about the fire on Saturday night should contact Humberside Police on 101, quoting log number 177 of June 13.

The Lamp pub sold and set to reopen

ONE of Hull's greatest music venues could be set to reopen after the building was sold freehold before auction.

The Lamp in Norfolk Street was a popular nightspot in the city before it was forced to close in June last year due to slow trade.

Owner Gavin Brennan, who ran the venue for six years, said it was no longer "financially viable" and he had no choice but to call it a day and lock up for good.

A number of businesspeople showed interest in the 4,321sq ft venue and it was set to go up for auction at Beverley Racecourse.

However, it was cancelled when someone came in last minute and a deal was struck between the buyer and commercial real estate company Colliers International.

It had a guide price of between £65,000 and £75,000, although Colliers cannot disclose how much it was finally sold for.

Fans of the venue on Twitter have been hoping someone would snap it up this summer.

One tweet read: "Let's all chip in our pocket money and get The Lamp back open."

Peter Melling, of Chartered Surveyors Black Cat Services in South Cave, visited the property in June and said it was "amazing" how quickly it had deteriorated in such a short space of time.

A lot of work is needed to be done to get it back to its best but Mikey Scott, who runs Fruit Trade Music recording studio in Humber Street, feels it would be worth it to turn it back into a place for live music.

He said: "The Lamp was a brilliant venue and I went to many gigs there as a teenager and played a lot of gigs when I started out in bands.

"It's also good for parties and has a nice bar and stage.

"People loved playing gigs at The Lamp and I was annoyed when concerts were on and I couldn't go.

"When it closed, it was a great disappointed for the people of Hull, especially ahead of our City of Culture Bid for 2017."

Mikey said he would like to see the venue welcome younger gig-goers who are desperate for somewhere to watch live bands.

He said: "Back when I was a teenager, I went with so many of my friends to gigs but people are worried about young people getting drunk watching bands.

"If it was done properly with the right security in place, it could be really good because there isn't really anywhere for them to go.

"So many venues have shut in Hull, including Hollywood and Vine in Beverley Road.

"Ringside and Adelphi sometimes struggle but people still want to go to gigs and The Lamp could be a success if music fans really got behind it."

Although the new owner of The Lamp remains a mystery, promoters are already queuing up to put gigs on.

Mikey said: "I would be very interested in speaking to whoever is taking it over and a monthly night for local talent who come in my studio would be fantastic."

THE Lamp was once a popular venue where a number of national acts played.

The Arctic Monkeys attended an after-party there and local bands such as Streaming Lights, Affairs and Tourist Information were among those last to perform at the music venue.

Since it closed, a lot of the acts and promoters have moved to the likes of Ringside in Beverley Road and Piper in Newland Avenue.

The Lamp was listed as a nightclub from 1995 until 1996 when it became more of a pub where local gigs were held.

It was once a police station and named The Jailhouse.

Mark O'Meley will not extend Hull FC stay - after signing of KR prop Mickey Paea

MARK O'Meley will not be offered a new deal by Hull FC despite speculation linking the in-form prop with an extended stay at the KC Stadium.

The 32-year-old Australian forward announced at the start of the year his decision to retire at the end of the season. As Hull's most consistent and potent forward this season O'Meley has been backed by many fans to earn a new contract.

Speculation that could become a reality intensified over the weekend following an interview printed in The Sun newspaper in which O'Meley was quoted as saying he would reconsider his retirement plans if Hull offered him a new contract.

However, the Mail has been told that will not happen with Hull having already recruited Hull KR prop Mickey Paea to replace the former Australian Test international.

Speaking in the Sun, O'Meley said: "If the club came and asked me, I would have a think about it. There's always the temptation and it does go through the back of your mind that you are a long time retired.

"I feel like I am playing pretty good rugby and I'm pretty confident at the moment – we'll just have to see what happens."

Sources inside the Hull camp have told the Mail O'Meley was disappointed with the article and feels his words were misinterpreted, with the ex-State of Origin player having already been told by Hull he will not be offered a new deal.

Super League clubs have to inform their players by the end of April with their intent on whether a new contract offer will be made or not.

O'Meley was informed back in April a new contract would not be forthcoming, with the player having already made clear he wanted to return home with his family after four years in Hull. The Black and Whites have not changed their position since, having brought Paea in to provide the impact and power which will be lost when O'Meley heads home.

The prop has been Hull's form player in recent weeks during a poor run of results for the Black and Whites and has been a fans' favourite since arriving at the KC from the NRL for the start of the 2010 season.

He continued his good run of form with another impressive display against Catalan Dragons as Hull reached the Challenge Cup semi-finals and will be hoping to bring his time at the KC to a close with a first trophy playing for the Black and Whites.

Hull City kick-off against Ferriby as Bruce tells stars to impress

STEVE Bruce says the onus is on his Hull City squad to take every chance that comes their way as the countdown to the Premier League kick-off begins in earnest tonight.

After the first week of pre-season training blew off the summer cobwebs, the Tigers travel to North Ferriby United this evening (7.30pm) for their traditional opening friendly fixture.

With a City XI also in action at Winterton Rangers tonight (7.30pm), the local double-header will provide every member of Bruce's squad with a run-out before jetting off to Portugal for a week of warm weather training tomorrow.

The Tigers' Premier League return at Chelsea on August 18 is now less than five weeks away and Bruce is eager to see his players stake a claim at every opportunity.

"These games are the start of our preparation for the new season and a good run-out for the players," said Bruce.

"We've had a good, tough first week of training and now it's about getting some minutes under the belts.

"These games are about fitness first and foremost, but it's important for the players to make sure they're ready and in my thoughts for the Chelsea game.

"There's still a buzz around the place and why shouldn't there be?

"There's some really big games ahead for us and there's still that excitement from what they achieved together last year. It's important we keep that going."

Although Bruce will split his squad in two this evening, the majority of his leading lights are expected to face the Villagers at The The Eon Visual Media Stadium, Church Road.

New boys Curtis Davies and Allan McGregor are both expected to make their first appearances in City colours, but fellow summer arrival Maynor Figueroa is unlikely to feature in either game as he works on regaining his fitness.

Elsewhere, Joe Dudgeon should make his return from nine months out. The left-back has not been in action since damaging his knee in October, a problem that ruled him out of the Tigers' promotion march.

Sone Aluko, who has not featured for City since January after Achilles surgery, may be included in the party that heads to Winterton for what should be a lighter examination.

City will hope neither game offers up any injury worries ahead of travelling to the Algarve tomorrow.

A week-long training camp in the Portugal sunshine will see the Tigers face Sheffield Wednesday and SC Braga in Albufeira.

• The Tigers development squad began their own pre-season on Saturday with a 2-0 win against Scarborough Athletic at Bridlington's Queensgate, thanks to an own-goal and one from Calaum Jahraldo-Martin.

Thief hit on head with stick by shopkeeper after trying to steal till

A THIEF was chased by a shopkeeper and hit over the head with a stick after trying to steal the shop's cash register.

Shane Agius, 32, targeted Bilton News in Main Road, Bilton, and tried to make off with the cash register.

When he ran with it to the door, owner Robert Peak, 60, hit him twice on the head with a wooden stick before Agius dropped the register.

Police caught Agius hiding in his bedroom but they had to free him after he became wedged under his bed and could not get out.

Jailing him for 20 months, Judge Mark Bury told him: "You admitted intending to take money from the till and when he opened it, you made a grab for the money in it.

"Unsurprisingly, he tried to resist you and tried to close the till drawer. You made a grab for the whole of the drawer and there was force used in the acquisition of it.

"He was not letting you go without a fight and he struck you on the head with a piece of wood which he kept behind the till.

"It caused you to drop the till and run off empty handed."

The judge said the justice system had to protect shopkeepers serving their communities.

He said: "The court has a duty to protect independent small shopkeepers who run vital services to local communities and because they are small, they have limited facilities to protect themselves.

"The court has a duty to protect the likes of Mr Peak from people like you."

Agius had planned the theft to fund his Valium addiction.

He had entered the store at 4.30pm on June 10 and had taken a bottle of water and a chocolate bar to the till worth £1.25.

He placed a handful of coins on the counter and was struggling to count his change so Mr Peak offered to help him.

When Mr Peak opened the till drawer, Agius reached over and tried to grab the notes from the back of the till.

Prosecutor Jharna Jobes said: "He opened the cash drawer and the defendant leaned over and made a grab for the notes and there was a tug of war over the till drawer.

"The complainant made a grab for the stick he uses to fish out change that drops between his cabinets and struck him over the head. He ran off and he struck him again and it caused him to drop the till.

"The defendant was arrested and was found hiding under his bed and he got stuck under it."

Agius, of Gatwick Garth, Bransholme, had to be taken to hospital because he sustained an injury to his head.

When he was arrested, he told police he was "off his head" at the time of the raid.

Agius pleaded guilty to burglary at Hull Crown Court.

His solicitor Paul Norton said: "He became homeless and returned to drugs with the consequence being this offending.

"When the shopkeeper struck him over the head on two occasions, he didn't retaliate. There was no other violence other than what he did.

"He fully realises there is no other alternative to a prison sentence."

Agius was on licence at the time after being released halfway through an 18-month sentence for disorderly behaviour.

In that crime, he had forced his way into someone's house, assaulting a father and son with two others, causing cuts and fractures to them.

Judge Bury said "When you were released from your lenient prison sentence for your previous offence, you were on licence and you committed this offence on licence. It was an aggravating feature.

"This has been charged as a burglary but the circumstances are akin to a robbery."

'Help me find Jo Jo, my potty-mouthed parrot'

THE owner of an African grey parrot is pleading for help finding her beloved pet that swears when it falls off its perch and answers the phone with "Hello".

Jean Botham, of Newport, near Brough, fears for the safety of Jo Jo who was stolen after thieves ransacked her home last week.

Jo Jo has been with the Botham family for the past six years but he has a damaged wing and cannot fly, along with a damaged claw.

Mrs Botham said: "We were out on Wednesday morning and when we came back, the front door and porch had been smashed in.

"We checked throughout the house which had been searched but only Jo Jo has been taken.

"He has a broken wing and can't really fly.

"These birds are worth up to £700 and, even with a broken wing, Jo Jo is worth a bit."

While many parrots can talk, Jo Jo is particularly talented.

Mrs Botham said: "He is very talkative and will say anything. When the phone rings, he will shout out hello before we even answer it.

"He also swears a fair bit. He doesn't do it randomly but when something happens like falling off his perch.

"He just listens to people and picks things up."

Mrs Botham is worried what impact the ordeal will have on her pet. She said: "I am really distraught, he was a part of our family.

"There is no question he will be traumatised.

"There were red tail feathers scattered about and he will certainly have tried to bite the thieves.

"We are very concerned for his safety."

Pet detective and Parrot Society member John Hayward compiles the theft register for exotic animals.

He has been alerted to this latest theft.

He said: "We deal with thefts of all exotic species, especially birds.

"Unfortunately, a number of parrots are stolen each year as they are quite a commodity for thieves to trade in for ready cash.

"This particular burglary appears to have been targeted by thieves specifically to steal the pet African grey parrot from the home of Jean.

"Parrots can live for many years, perhaps 50 to 80 years, and bond with families who keep them as companion pets.

"It is therefore an extremely cruel type of crime and the chances are this parrot won't survive.

"Whatever the circumstances, the bird won't get fed its normal diet and this bird isn't 100 per cent fit and needs treatment.

"We need to get this bird back as soon as possible and anyone with information should call me on 07802 404929."

Humberside Police are also looking into the theft.

Investigating officer John Kynaston said: "The suspects entered the property by smashing a rear door, once inside the intruders searched the house and appear to have only taken the victim's pet parrot, Jo Jo.

"The victim of this crime is desperate to have Jo Jo returned to her.

"He has been their family pet for several years and they are worried about him being harmed.

"Investigations are ongoing into this burglary.

"However, whenever family pets are taken, it is particularly hard on the victims, so if anyone knows where Jo Jo is please contact the police as soon as possible so he can be reunited with his owner."

Anyone who knows anything about the theft of Jo Jo should call Humberside Police on 101.

Hull FC coach Gentle says side ready for Warrington challenge

$

PETER Gentle says he never once questioned the character or desire of his Hull FC side after seeing them end a four-match losing streak by booking their place in the Challenge Cup semi-finals.

The Aussie coach was full of praise for the resolve shown by his players, who reached the last four of the cup with a 24-13 victory over Catalan Dragons in the south of France.

Rewarded with a clash against Warrington, the result in France means Hull have bounced back from a miserable month which has seen them drop down to eighth in the league ladder.

While the Black and Whites' performance was far from perfect in the stifling heat of Perpignan, Gentle was unconcerned.

"When you go through tough times you can go one of two ways," he told the Mail. "You can fall apart at the seams or you can pull together tighter, we came together.

"We were unlucky last week, but we know we are heading on the right track and you could see that. It is one of the most important results.

"The resolve and character of this side is something I have never doubted or questioned. We still need to tidy our execution up, but I cannot be critical after that game in those conditions. We're delighted with the win."

Hull's attack may not have been at its best, but an exceptional defensive display led by man-of-the-match Danny Houghton proved the catalyst for victory.

Under increasing pressure as Catalan chased the game, Hull held out for the most part, keeping the Dragons to a try either side of half-time, thanks to a resilience and determination that had Gentle purring afterwards.

"There was error after error compounded with a lot of penalties and there was some poor discipline on our part, but we held together defensively, it was a massive effort," he added.

"It means a lot to us. We pulled really tightly together as a group and being away helped with that. There were a few special things we did this week and everyone from the water boy to the captain played their part.

"It was a great team effort typified by a great team performance. There were so many great efforts out there and that is what it takes. It was the best team performance I've been involved in."

Hull will return to league matters this Friday with a trip to Bradford Bulls as they attempt to re-ignite their Super League campaign.

Following their visit to Odsal, Hull are back in Challenge Cup action with a place at Wembley in store and Gentle has challenged his men to not let their efforts in France be in vain.

"It is terrific for us to be in the last four. We want to get down to the last two though, so that is the next challenge," he added.

HULL will today send Ben Galea for scans on a bicep injury which may end his season.

Boy killed in crash days after prom

A TEENAGE boy was killed in a crash on his way home from work less than a week after starting his first full-time job.

Rhys Wilkinson, 16, was a passenger in a red Fiat Punto involved in a head-on crash on the A645 Drax Link Road close to Rawcliffe.

Just two weeks ago, Rhys and two friends had arrived by helicopter for his high school prom before leaving to start his first job. Police are investigating the cause of the accident involving the Punto and a grey Ford Focus C-Max.

Rhys, who had three younger brothers, was pronounced dead at the scene just after the crash at about 6.20pm on Friday.

Mum Lianne, 37, said: "He'd just had his prom from school and he'd really enjoyed it. He was due to start his apprenticeship as a mechanic in September but they had asked him to start work early. Everything was just perfect, really, before this."

Standing in front of the family home is a Renault 5 Rhys had been in the process of fixing up, ready for the day he passed his test.

After finishing school a week ago, he had started work at Wilco Motosave in Selby.

Rhys had always been a hard worker, doing a newspaper round from the age of 13 and, later, collecting glasses at the Ferry Boat pub.

Dad Richard, who also works for Wilco but is based in York, said: "He needed money for his car project.

"He was always working on things, fiddling with them. He used to strip down everything.

"He was a real hard worker."

Yesterday, his friends gathered at the family home in Cotswold Avenue, Goole, to support his family.

Rhys's brothers Kyle, 14, Luke, ten, and Ryan, seven, were being looked after by their grandparents yesterday while Richard and Lianne spent time with their eldest son's friends.

Most of the teenagers gathered at the family home were Rhys's rugby teammates from Goole RUFC and friends from Goole High School.

Many placed flowers outside the family's garden shed, which Rhys had converted into a gym.

Jordan Munday, 16, who was with Rhys when they arrived in the helicopter for their prom, said: "He was always working towards something and keeping busy.

"He'd got so many talents. As well as sport, he was a brilliant artist."

Josh Wolfenden, also 16, said: "He could sort out most things. He could just make anyone laugh.

"He was always working but he found a way to make everything enjoyable."

Danuta Tomasz, headteacher at Goole High School, said: "We are all still in shock at the news.

"It was only a couple of weeks ago that he was having his photo taken for the prom.

"He was one of those students that got on with everyone. He was popular and well liked and had so much going for him. I think we are all still coming to terms with what has happened.

"We're a small and close community at Goole High and we are going to be doing our best to support our students as they deal with this sudden and tragic death.

"Our thoughts go to Rhys's family."

POLICE are investigating the cause of the accident that claimed Rhys's life.

They are particularly keen to trace the driver of a small white car that was travelling in front of the Fiat immediately before the collision.

The Punto was travelling from the direction of Drax towards the roundabout in Rawcliffe Road when it was involved in the collision with the Ford Focus, travelling in the opposite direction, at about 6.20pm on Friday night.

The driver of the Punto, a 25-year-old Goole man, was taken to Leeds Royal Infirmary with serious injuries.

The driver of the Ford Focus, a 40-year-old local man and his six-year-old son, who was travelling in the front passenger seat, were both taken to Doncaster Royal Infirmary.

Witnesses should call 101, quoting log 633 of July 12.

AFTER a week of blisteringly hot weather St. Swithin's Day will determine how long we'll keep our sunglasses on for. The old wives' tale goes that if it rains today (July 15) - it will rain for the next 40 days - while a sunny day will see clear skies for 40 days. As the temperature peaked at 27C over the weekend, families sat sunbathing in their gardens and headed to the beach to make the most of it. We want to know what you've been up to while the sun has had his hat on, whether you've been on holiday, or making ice lollies at home. The Mail is asking for all of your best creative sunny photographs of funny hats, crazy summer shirts and activities with friends and family. The winning photograph will receive a crate of beer or a box of wine and be featured on The Mail's website, Facebook and Twitter. Although we saw some cloud in Hull yesterday (Sunday) there were still plenty of people strolling through the city centre in their shorts and t-shirts. Met Office forecasters say the temperature is likely to remain in its 20s this week, after a heat wave alert was issued for East Yorkshire. The temperature is set to hit 26C later this afternoon as people across the city rush home from the office and slap the sun-cream on once more. And one lucky snapper could be relaxing while sipping a beer or glass of wine after winning the prize for the best sun photograph. To enter, post your photos on our Facebook page, tweet @HullDailyMail or e-mail news@mailnewsmedia.co.uk. Ten things you didn't know about St. Swithin's Day 1)St. Swithin (or more properly, Swithun) was a Saxon Bishop of Winchester. 2)He was famous for charitable gifts and building churches. 3)On his deathbed in about 861, he asked to be buried in a humble grave outside the north wall of his cathedral so that the "sweet rain from heaven" could fall on his grave. 4)For nine years, his wishes were followed, until the monks of Winchester attempted to remove his remains to a splendid shrine inside the cathedral on July 15. 5)According to legend there was a heavy rain storm either during the ceremony or on its anniversary. Believing that it was St Swithin showing his displeasure, the monks decided against moving his remains. 6)The emblems of St. Swithin refers to the legend of the 40 days of rain (raindrops) and the apples from the trees he planted. 7)No apple should picked or eaten in a year before July 15, according the myth. 8)To mark St Swithin's Day, you could read more international weather wisdom, featuring such gems as "snow is due when the cat washes behind both ears". 9)While many hope it'll be sunny, apple-growers hope for rain. It is seen as the saints watering the crops, in anticipation of the feasts of Saints Peter and Paul. 10)Musician Billy Bragg wrote a song about St Swithin's Day, featuring lyrics such as "It's not the same, I miss the thunder, I miss the rain".

Drunks cause mayhem on new River Hull footbridge

AN OPEN-AIR alcohol ban could be introduced across the city to curb drunks causing mayhem.

Hull City Council is considering extending police powers beyond the city centre after drunks were caught wreaking havoc on the city's new £7m footbridge.

Businesses are also calling for action around Anlaby Road to deal with "Shaun Of The Dead" drunks outside their shops.

The hi-tech bridge over the River Hull is the only one of its kind in England allowing people to "ride" on it as it opens for river traffic.

But just days after its official opening, the bridge has become a magnet for street drinkers who are stripping off and jumping into the river to the distress of families and tourists visiting the city.

Now, police, who can already seize alcohol from drunks in the city centre, could be given extra powers to tackle drunks in other parts of the city.

Deputy council leader Daren Hale said: "My partner works near the bridge and she says some of the stuff going on there is quite incredible, including people stripping off and going swimming in the river.

"The bridge was always meant to be a visitor attraction but we were probably hoping for a very different kind of visitor."

Humberside Police are already stepping up patrols in the area because of the trouble.

Another worker based near the bridge, who did not want to be named, said: "The police are down here quite a lot.

"There have always been problems with rough sleepers in the area but the bridge does seem to causing a few extra problems in term of antisocial behaviour."

City councillors are being asked to consider extending a designated zone covering the city centre which gives the police extra powers to confiscate alcohol from rowdy drinkers.

If agreed, the extension would cover the new bridge and a section of Anlaby Road in west Hull.

Councillor Hale said the seizure powers covering the city centre were also needed in Anlaby Road, between Hull Royal Infirmary and the flyover, after repeated complaints from businesses about street drunks on their doorsteps.

After witnessing the problem during a recent visit to a restaurant, he said the scenes reminded him of a zombie movie.

"It was like something out of Shaun Of The Dead," he said.

The new footbridge is aimed at improving access between the Old Town and the east bank of the river for pedestrians and cyclists.

Inspector Jane Biglin, of Humberside Police, said dedicated early- morning and late-night patrols in the area of the bridge had recently been introduced in a bid to crack down on unruly behaviour.

She said officers were working with the council's antisocial behaviour officials on the problem.

Insp Biglin said officers were also targeting retailers in the area known to be selling individual cans of high-strength alcohol.

The first no-booze zone was introduced around the war memorial in Paragon Street in late 2004.

Cashpoint 'spy' scam: Woman loses £700

BANK customers in Beverley are being warned to be on their guard against scammers targeting cash machines.

Police are investigating after a woman had almost £700 stolen from her account in two separate transactions after she used a cashpoint in the town.

The woman only noticed the money was missing when she went to withdraw some money to pay her bills last week and discovered she had no cash left in her account.

She said: "I want other people to be aware of what is happening.

"I don't want them to be robbed of hundreds of pounds like I have been.

"People need to be very careful when using cash machines and make sure no one is watching behind them."

The lady reported the theft to the Post Office, with whom she banks, and also to Humberside Police at Beverley, who told her of a similar theft.

Police believe the woman was watched while entering her pin number into cash machines at Tesco, Asda near Norwood and outside WH Smith in the town centre.

The problem has now been reported to Action Fraud, which is supporting the call for people in Beverley to be on alert.

A spokesman for Action Fraud said: "If people spot anything unusual about a cash machine, or if there are signs of tampering, they should not use it and report it to the bank as soon as possible.

"If someone is behaving suspiciously or watching you, you should cancel your transaction and use another machine."

People are also reminded to shield their pin number and use their free hand to shield the key pad from prying eyes.

The Beverley woman said: "The last time I used my card was on the Saturday to withdraw £10, so all I can think is it happened then.

"It is very annoying and frustrating to have something like this happen. I just want other people to know and be more aware when they are out and about in the town centre."

The woman has since had the money refunded to her by the Post Office. She said: "It is great that I have got my money back but other people may not be so lucky.

"People really need to be on their guard."

Action Fraud is advising people to make sure they monitor their accounts on a regular basis to check for any fraudulent transactions.

The spokesman said: "An identity protection service such as ProtectMyID monitors your Experian credit report and alerts you by email or text message to potential fraudulent activity.

"If it's fraud, a dedicated caseworker will help you resolve everything."
