Clearance work has started today (Tuesday) on the controversial£27 million overhaul of Beverley's transport network.
The multi-million pound scheme includes the long-awaited and much-needed Beverley Southern Relief Road as well as amendments to the Grovehill junction, Swinemoor roundabout and the Flemingate level crossing which have caused concern for local residents.
Work will begin at the Grovehill junction and on the Swinemoor roundabout today, whilst clearance works will start at the boundary of the new Beverley Southern Relief Road on Monday, February 4.
These are expected to be complete by the end of February and the work will make way for the construction of the transport plan, which is programmed to start this summer and be completed early 2015.
Plans for the development went on display earlier this month causing concern for residents.
Steven Lambert from Molescroft said: "There is going to be a massive amount of traffic along Swinemoor Lane, we are rapidly approaching a bottle-like situation. There doesn't appear to be much expansion of the actual road itself and I am not too convinced by the expansion of the roundabout. The road is already congested and this will just make it worse.
"This will be the worst road way in Beverley if these plans carry on the way they are."
Mr Lambert also expressed his concerns about how little the exhibition had been advertised by the council.
Located within highway verges and adjoining land, the works are not expected to affect road users and will include trimming and removing sections of hedging, bushes and trees along the routes in advance of the approaching bird nesting season.
Tenders for the Beverley Integrated Transport Plan were returned to the council last month and are currently being analysed prior to submitting a Full Approval bid to the Department for Transport (DfT) later this month.
