Liam Salter: I'll be ready to play and not let Hull KR down

HULL KR's Liam Salter says he will be ready and able to step up and start the season as Rovers' right centre against Catalan if coach Craig Sandercock needs him.

The Hull-born player looks set to get the nod as new signing Sean Gleeson is currently struggling with a back injury and has not featured in pre-season.

Salter has played against both Wigan and Hull, and having impressed, looks the leading candidate to start against the Dragons, the side he made his Super League debut against last year.

The 19-year-old says he is more than ready to re-acquaint himself against the French side, in Rovers' season opener a week tomorrow.

"If I get to start the season against Catalan, it would be a great achievement for me," Salter told the Mail.

"It depends on injuries but I'll happily put my hand up to play.

"I'm ready for the challenge, although there is stiff competition for places.

"I made my debut against Catalan last year, and I expect they will make the first game of the season a tough and physical contest.

"They have a very big pack and I hope to be involved.

"Craig hasn't said anything to me about whether I'll be playing or not.

"I just have to do all I can in training to make sure I give myself the best chance possible of playing."

If Salter is given the nod, he could be starting the season alongside new signing Omari Caro.

Caro is set to start on the right wing as Craig Hall deputises for the suspended Travis Burns for the first four games.

Salter, who scored three tries in 11 Super League games last season, is confident the right hand side can be as prolific as the left side of Rovers' attack was last season.

Kris Welham and Dave Hodgson scored 29 tries in 36 league games on the left, and Salter is confident the addition of Burns will boost Rovers' potency on the opposite flank.

"We can be just as good on the right, especially as we will have Travis on our side, and possibly Omari too," he said.

"Con Mika is looking fitter than ever and already he is showing up with some big hits.

"We are looking forward to getting back playing and doing the best we can."

Salter hopes he can help the Robins start the new campaign with a win.

It's a feeling he experienced only twice in the 12 games he played last year, which included a cup defeat to Catalan in April.

He featured in eight of the nine defeats which KR lost by six points or less, but believes the side are better prepared to turn those games around this time.

"We were disappointed to lose the games we did," said Salter.

"We should have closed matches out better than we did, we all know that.

"Hopefully when games are close this time around, we'll win our fair share."
