A CROYDON park is in a race to secure money for improvements from grants by The Mayor of London.
Wandle Park is one of six London parks shortlisted to receive up to £175,000 from the Big Green Fund II's £900,000, with the vote for the favourite in the public's hands.
Improvements would include upgrading the Waddon New Road entrance to relocate the bus stop, better lighting and installation of zebra crossings from West Croydon station and wheeling channels on the bridge and on new stairs onto Jubilee Bridge.
Councillor Kathy Bee, Croydon Council's cabinet member for environment and transport, is delighted that the Access to Wandle Park project has been shortlisted and urges residents to vote.
She said: "Wandle Park is a real gem in our borough. If we were to get funding, we would be able to significantly improve access to Wandle Park from the town centre and make a real contribution to the huge regeneration already under way in Croydon."
Boris Johnson, Mayor of London, said better quality green spaces are important for the whole of London.
He said: "There is absolutely no doubt that parks and green spaces in urban areas improve the wellbeing and quality of life of local people and through the Big Green Fund II we look forward to transforming sites across the capital that thousands of residents will enjoy."
The Mayor's team will use the votes to determine which schemes to prioritise for funding.
The Big Green Fund invests in green space planning, designing and managing and saw a £2million investment in six environmental projects in London, including Hounslow and Sutton.
Other projects nominated include the Wetlands to Wetlands Greenway in Hackney and Stanmore Marsh Restoration in Harrow.
