THE Met Office has issued a severe cold weather alert for East Yorkshire as temperatures are expected to drop below freezing at times over the weekend.
Widespread frost and icy conditions on the roads are forecast, along with a risk of some sleet and light snowfall over the weekend.
A spokesman for the Met office told the Mail today: "We are looking at the high likelihood of some extremely cold weather this weekend, and that cold weather is expected to continue into early next week."
The weather will get gradually colder throughout Friday, with temperatures dropping to 0C in Hull, although it will feel as cold as -6C in the early hours of Saturday.
With temperatures unlikely to climb higher than 5C, the Met Office spokesman said wintry showers, including sleet or light snowfall, could be expected.
Meanwhile, a yellow weather warning remains in place for strong winds today, with gusts of 60-70mph expected in places.
Gales were expected this afternoon, with winds then dying down into the evening.
Today's "amber" cold weather alert, the second most serious of four categories, warns that prolonged periods of cold weather can be dangerous, especially for the very young, very old or those with chronic diseases.
