A Hull company is working on a groundbreaking project that could change the way train passengers pay for journeys. ESP Group is creating and supplying "smartcards" for rail passengers under a Department for Transport ticketing programme. The cards, which will work in a similar way to an Oyster card, will come in the form of tokens, tickets, wristbands, key fobs and accessories. They will be rolled out in the south-east of England later this year, with the scheme then expected to form a template for similar changes across the UK. Terry Dunn, chief executive of ESP Group, said: "This is exciting for us because it sets the standard for smart card programmes across the country." ESP, which has offices in Holderness Road and the Shine Innovation Park in St Mark Street, has delivered more than 31 million smartcards in the past few years. It employs more than 60 people in Hull, with additional employees working in Scotland and Germany.
