FORMER Hull FC star Jason Smith has been charged with trafficking cocaine by police in Australia. Smith, who is now 42, retired from rugby league back in 2007 after a four-year stint at the Black and Whites from 2001 to 2004. He went on to own and run the Mill Street Tavern in Toowoomba, but has now been charged with the drug offences following a six-month investigation. Smith scored 17 tries in 80 appearances whilst pulling on the Hull shirt, before heading home to play for Canberra and the North Queensland Cowboys. His stellar career also included appearances for Australia and Queensland in the State of Origin. His arrest comes on the back of a joint investigation between the Crime and Corruption Commission and the Darling Downs Tactical Crime Squad. He faces allegations of trafficking about 280g of the drug, along with local restaurant owner Jason Wood between June and December last year. Speaking in today's Courier Mail in Australia, Detective Superintendent Paul Schmidt, who is Southern Region crime coordinator, said Smith will also face an additional charge of possession after police allegedly found about 3.5g of cocaine when he was on the Gold Coast last year.
