Hull City saw their FA Cup journey come to an end after succumbing to a 2-0 defeat at Arsenal in a repeat of last year's final.
Goals in either half from Per Mertesacker and Alexis Sanchez saw off the Tigers, who never really threatened an upset at the Emirates.
Manager Steve Bruce made no fewer than ten changes to the side that beat Everton 2-0 on New Year's Day, with captain Curtis Davies the sole survivor.
Tom Ince, Maynor Figueroa and Harry Maguire were among those given a chance to impress, while Tom Huddlestone returned from his four-game ban.
Arsenal started the brighter and had the game's first chance after just four minutes. Joel Campbell played a neat one-two with Alexis Sanchez and Steve Harper had to spread himself to deny the Costa Rican from close-range.
To their credit, City soon settled and enjoyed a decent spell of possession.
The Gunners, though, remained a threat themselves and on 14 minutes, Sanchez should have worked Harper when well placed. After selling a dummy to a City defender, the Chilean forward lifted a shot over the net from eight yards out.
Five minutes later, the home side were ahead, with Sanchez the creator this time. His 19th-minute corner found the head of Mertesacker, who beat Davies all too easily to nod home the opening goal.
It was perhaps a little harsh on City, who had started the game in a decent fashion, but they were made to pay for some slack defending.
Arsenal almost doubled their advantage a minute later when Tomas Rosicky dribbled his way into space before playing an inch-perfect through ball to Sanchez. He rounded Harper, before seeing his shot blocked brilliantly on the line by Paul McShane.
City's goal was leading a charmed life and from the resulting corner, Nacho Monreal saw a flicked header come back off the post.
Harper was forced into action again soon after, this time preventing Yannick Sagbo from putting through his own net from six yards out.
The Tigers regrouped and forced a half chance of their own when Maguire saw a header on target comfortably saved. But Arsenal continued to look the most likely and when the whistle blew for half-time, City were thankful that they only trailed 1-0.
The second half started the way the first finished and, unsurprisingly, Sanchez was central to Arsenal's threat going forward. It was his low drive that tested Harper on 48 minutes, but the City keeper was equal to the effort.
As they did in the first half, City enjoyed periods of possession but they were wasteful with the ball in the final third and it was Arsenal who continued to create the better chances.
Campbell should have done better on 61 minutes when the ball broke to him on the edge of the area, but he could only drag his shot wide of Harper's post.
After 66 minutes, Theo Walcott should have doubled the Gunners' advantage when he was played through by Santi Cazorla. Much to the relief of the City defence, though, the England international's prodded effort was just wide.
The hosts continued to create chance after chance but failed to make City pay. On 74 minutes, Sanchez again went close, but Harper got down well to smother the ball away.
The City defence, and in particular Maguire, were holding strong but City's threat in the final third was non-existent.
After 82 minutes, the Gunners sealed their win and the goalscorer was no surprise. Sanchez was afforded too much space by Davies to turn inside the City area before placing the ball past the despairing dive of Harper.
Arsenal deserved the goal on the balance of play, but it was nonetheless deflating from a City perspective.
The Tigers finished with a flurry as Huddlestone and Ince went close but it was too little, too late.Arsenal: Ospina, Monreal, Mertesacker, Chambers, Bellerin, Coquelin, Cazorla, Campbell (Maitland-Niles 90), Rosicky, Walcott (Oxlade-Chamberlain 76), Sanchez (Akpom 84)Hull City: Harper, Figueroa, Davies, Maguire, McShane, Brady, Quinn, Huddlestone, Ince, Aluko (Elmohamady 62), Sagbo (Hernandez 67)
