Keldgate, Beverley to remain closed due to safety fears

Keldgate in Beverley will remain closed due to safety fears, it was announced today.
Inspectors from East Riding Council inspected a 4m wall adjoining Keldgate Manor yesterday (Tuesday), over fears it may collapse due to defects with its foundations.
The wall has been deemed a danger to the public and an emergency road closure was put in place yesterday evening.
Contractors started partial demolition works, however progress has been slower than originally expected due to the wall's closeness to gas and electrical supplies.
Yorkshire Water drainage and highways engineers are on site to decide whether repairs are needed to the sewer and any associated work.
Until the wall is made safe, Keldgate will remain closed between the Eastgate and Queensgate mini roundabouts.
Access will be maintained at all times for residents and a diversion will be in place via Lairgate, Hengate, New Walkergate and Railway Street.
Nigel Leighton from East Riding Council, said: "The council's contractor is on site carrying out the necessary works to make the wall safe.
"The temporary road closure is required due to the size of the wall and its proximity to the highway, footpath and neighbouring properties.
"At present, the extent of the damage underground is still to be determined and will require further excavation works to ascertain a solution. Therefore, the council cannot guarantee when the road will be re-open at this time.
"The council apologises for the inconvenience this will cause, however these works are being undertaken as expediently as possible and are in the interests of public safety."
