THREE breweries are creating 22 jobs as East Yorkshire establishes itself as a haven for craft beer.

Wold Top, Atom Beers and the Yorkshire Brewing Company's expansion plans have been supported with £187,000 of funding from the Humber local Enterprise Partnership.

All three have been growing rapidly in the past 12 months.

Atom was launched in January by Allan Rice and partner Sarah Thackray and has now produced 200,000 pints in more than 16 different styles.

Mr Rice said: "We had a clear growth plan, but to realise it, we needed to increase production and develop our marketing.

"Thanks to an injection of capital from the Regional Growth Fund, we were able to accelerate our plans and meet demand.

"Away from the retail side, we maintain our focus on science and education. We run tours of the brewery and an eight-week long intensive beer school for beer-lovers wanting to improve their knowledge and craft. We are also actively involved in scientific research."

The brewery, which won Start-Up of the Year at the Hull Daily Mail Business Awards last month, supplies bars and restaurants nationwide and overseas.

Atom secured £40,000 to help create nine jobs.

The Yorkshire Brewing Company is based in Hull's Fruit Market. The firm is run by Guy Falkingham, who spent five years researching recipes before he set up.

Mr Falkingham even took a micro-brewing course at the University of Sunderland to prepare for the job.

He now produces 8,000 pints of beer a week and distributes them to regional pubs, bars, shops and restaurants.

The business won £25,000 of funding and will use the money to create seven jobs.

Mr Falkingham said: "The funding has been a great bonus to our business. It will enable us to invest in additional equipment, so we can increase our manufacturing capability and capitalise on growth opportunities in the UK and overseas.

"We are committed to developing our business and creating new jobs within the Humber region, which will further contribute to the prosperity of the local economy."

The biggest chunk of cash went to Wold Top, the longest- established of the three.

It secured £122,000 and will create six jobs plus a part-time role. The grant will be spent on building a brewery and testing lab at the business in Wold Newton, near Bridlington.

Gill Mellor, who runs Wold Top with husband Tom, said: "We are very proud to be able to provide sustainable employment in a rural area.

"The grant approval has given us the confidence to take on new members of staff.

"We try to be sustainable in our impact towards the environment, for which we have won several awards, and also aspire to have a business that will continue to provide sustainable employment for the future."
