Hull FC: 'No-brainer' to keep Gareth Ellis captain and Danny Houghton as deputy

Hull FC have announced Gareth Ellis will remain as captain and Danny Houghton as his deputy for the 2015 Super League season, writes Craig Murdock.

There were certainly problems at FC last season, but they weren't ones stemming from leadership of the team.

For me, Ellis had his best year for a while and was dominant when he played.

He's not a shouter and bawler, he leads by example.

He's Mr Rugby League and I think he's a great role model to have as leader of the club. He speaks well to the media, but does his main talking on the pitch.

He's the sort of player that if he asks you to do something you do it, and he wouldn't ask you to do anything that he wouldn't do himself.

That's the sort of leader you want, rather than a shouter and bawler, so for me keeping him as captain was a no-brainer.

As vice-captain, Houghton is a great lad. He's a bit more vocal, and being local he knows what it means to play for Hull FC.

However, he can also tap into Ellis' experience and why wouldn't he do that?

Again, for me, it was a no-brainer to stick with Houghton as vice-captain.

That's not to say there weren't other candidates, I've heard Leon Pryce and Mark Minichiello's names mentioned.

I am sure both will bring leadership to the club, you don't play that number of games at top-class level without learning something.

Again, it would be crazy not to tap into that knowledge and listen to what they have to say. I'm sure Ellis will benefit from that experience.

While the Black and Whites have already named their captains duo, at Rovers coach Chris Chester is yet to make his mind up.

There's a lot of experience in the club now with the likes of Mick Weyman, but they also have a lot of young players.

Once Terry Campese arrives I can see him being captain.

If he is fit he has to play, he's got lots of experience in the NRL as captain, so it would be crazy not to tap into that.

I can't speak for Chester, but it appears he's waiting until Campese arrives to see how he fits in.

If he fits in as I would expect, then I think he'll be odds-on favourite.
