'We never gave up on baby Kaleb and will always be by his side' – brave couple Shaun and Kirsty Lewis

THEY were just an ordinary couple, looking forward to the birth of their baby boy.

But Shaun and Kirsty Lewis's world fell apart when doctors told them their unborn child had two complex heart conditions, which meant he would be unlikely to survive his birth.

They refused to give up on the baby they named Kaleb and today, Mr Lewis says his now nine-week-old son is his inspiration.

"When people complain about a cough or a sniffle or a bad back, they should take inspiration from Kaleb," he said.

"He doesn't do anything by half, he does everything in style. He shouldn't be here but he is and he's getting stronger.

"I believe in God now because we've been through all this and Kaleb is still here."

From the second he was born, Kaleb has faced a battle to survive. On the operating table when he was just 23 minutes old, he has since faced surgery and setbacks over the past eight weeks.

But his parents, who also have a three-year-old son, Korban, have been with him in a Birmingham hospital all the way as he gets stronger with each passing day.

"I've told Kaleb that no matter which way in life this goes, we will always be by his side," said Mr Lewis. "We will do what it takes, for however long it takes."

Day by day, they survive on snatched minutes of sleep.

Mr Lewis said: "We've got ourselves into a sleeping pattern now because we were working ourselves into the ground.

"Now, I go to the accommodation for a few hours' sleep while Kirsty is with him, and then she'll go while I stay with him. But we do feel guilty when we go to sleep, even for a couple of hours while he's sleeping.

"But we have to do it because we need to be strong for him and we will be there for our son."

It is difficult for the couple to be away from Korben and Mrs Lewis's 11-year-old son Kodi, but friends and family are travelling from Hull and the rest of the country to give them strength.

"It's been really hard on Korben these past two weeks because he wants his mum and dad and he's been getting upset, but people are bringing him here at the weekend and it's getting easier because Kaleb is in a much more stable condition now," said Mr Lewis.

Facing the ordeal together, the couple have found comfort in each other when Kaleb faced another obstacle or his condition deteriorated.

"It was so hard for Kirsty because she had just had a baby and this was always going to be a million times worse," said Mr Lewis. "But she is just the greatest, strongest woman on the planet. I'm so happy, even in these unfortunate circumstances, that she is the mother of my children.

"Even before all this, she was an amazing woman and this has just ticked that box for me.

"It has been hard and it's been so emotional but, usually, when I have a down moment, Kirsty is strong and it's the same the other way. We're taking strength from each other."

Kirsty's three sisters have set up a Facebook page – search for "Kalebs Cause" – and fundraising events have been held to support the family financially. Mrs Lewis has had to give up her business as a self-employed hairdresser, while Mr Lewis, a builder, is now caring full-time for his wife and children, although his employers have promised to keep his job open.

"Our families have just been fantastic," said Mr Lewis. "But we're getting so much support from the other families here too. While their children might have different cardiac conditions, we're all in the same boat."

And, all the while, Kaleb makes it through another day. Although he is facing a great deal more treatment, the signs are more positive than the couple could ever have dreamed of.

"I've always wanted my kids to be the best," said Mr Lewis. "And words can't describe how proud I am of Kaleb."
