WEST Hull coach Mark Hewitt believes next season's inaugural League One Cup can provide many of his players with a chance to prove a point to past coaches – who believed they couldn't make the professional leap.
The Green and Golds will host North Wales Crusaders in the first round of the new competition, which sees Championship One teams pitted against each other.
Having a vastly experienced squad at his disposal, Hewitt has already spoken to some of his players who are keen to show their skills against what he describes as Wests' 'toughest draw'.
"Some of our lads were let down at a young age by some coaches who said they weren't good enough to become pro's. I believe in my players and they are keen to prove that theory wrong," Hewitt told the Mail.
"We played them in the Challenge Cup in 2013 and they beat us 82-6, so we are under no illusions that it will be a tough afternoon obviously.
"However, it's great to be recognised for our achievements down in the NCL and for a chance to test ourselves against some top opposition from Championship One.
"It gives the lads a great chance to enjoy their rugby and show the professionals what they can do."
Due to their all-conquering 2014 season in the National Conference League, East Leeds also enter the new structure due to being runners- up in the Conference Trophy competition.
Hewitt hopes Wests' North Road ground will be suitable for the competition, with discussions ongoing over the playable venue.
"Last time in the Cup, we had to travel over to Warrington's old ground Wilderspool. Hopefully, that won't be the case this time as we're keen to play them in Hull," he said.
"It's fantastic to be involved in a new competition in our sport and I'm sure the boys will relish the opportunity come game-day."
