EIGHT tonnes of tobacco has been seized from a container on board a cargo ship at Hull docks.
Border Force officers discovered the tobacco in a container which arrived on a cargo ship from Rotterdam on Monday.
Officers searched the container and found 16 pallets, each loaded with three, large shrink-wrapped boxes.
The boxes contained large, clear plastic bags filled with loose leaf tobacco.
Mark Robinson, assistant director for Border Force, said: "This is a significant seizure of illegal tobacco which will have caused major disruption to smugglers.
"We have had several impressive seizures in the Humber (region) recently and it is a testament to the professionalism and dedication of our officers.
"Border Force will continue to play a key role in fighting and disrupting serious and organised crime and protecting the UK's economy."
The tobacco will now be destroyed. Anyone with information about activity they suspect may be linked to smuggling should call the Border Force hotline on 0800 59 5000.
