Why West Brom's Boaz Myhill could have become a Hull City legend

Former Hull City goalkeeper Boaz Myhill is back at the KC Stadium tomorrow with his current team West Brom, but his return will prompt fans to wonder what might have been with the Welshman. Still held in high regard at the Tigers, had he stayed, there's no doubt he could have become a City legend. In fact, there's no reason why it couldn't have been him lining up at Wembley to face Arsenal in last season's FA Cup final. As it is, he is now kicking his heels on the bench at the Baggies. But it could have been so different. Signed from Aston Villa for £50,000 in 2003, he went on to become a firm fixture in the City side, making 277 appearances as one of four players to play in all four divisions with City, along with Andy Dawson, Ian Ashbee and Ryan France. A string of top performances enhanced his reputation, before a heroic 2009 display at White Hart Lane gained a shock 0-0 draw at Tottenham, who went on to gain a Champions League place that season. After Myhill left for West Brom in 2010, City had no real number one and filled the void with countless keepers coming in on loan. Realistically, it wasn't until Allan McGregor was signed last season that City had a solid, consistent number one again. Signed by Roberto Di Matteo, Myhill had to play second fiddle to established number one Scott Carson. And when Di Matteo's successor, Roy Hodgson, brought in Ben Foster, Myhill still rarely got a game. His best run in the team came when Foster was out for four months in late 2013. Despite impressing in Foster's absence, he soon made way. To date, he has only made a mere 40 appearances for a club which paid £1.5m to secure his services. A bargain, dictated by City's reported debts of around £25m at the time. Had he stayed, would Myhill have become the best goalkeeper in Hull's history? Unfortunately, no-one will ever know. When he runs out of the tunnel at the KC tomorrow, there's no doubt he'll receive a hero's welcome. But as he takes his seat on the Baggies bench, surely he will join the City fans in thinking about what might have been.
