THE University of Hull this afternoon paid tribute to PhD student Tom Chesters, who was killed in an avalanche in the Scottish Highlands at the weekend.
In a statement, Frances Owen, registrar and secretary at the university, said: "The University of Hull can confirm that one of the students who was fatally injured in the Glencoe avalanche disaster was a student at the university.
"Tom Chesters was working towards a PhD in medical engineering, with a special focus on researching osteoporosis.
"We at the University of Hull are deeply saddened by this loss and pass on our heartfelt condolences to the families of all those affected by this tragedy, and especially to Tom's family and friends."
Prof Michael Fagan, Professor of Medical and Biological Engineering, and Dr Catherine Dobson, Tom's PhD supervisor, paid this tribute: "Tom was a fantastic colleague and friend with so much energy and enthusiasm for everything he did.
"He was a real asset to our research group and was making great progress with his PhD research into osteoporosis. He had a very promising career ahead of him. We will all miss him enormously."
