UKIP by-election winner Malcolm Milns says his party is set to make more waves across the East Riding.

He became UKIP's first East Riding councillor after winning a seat in the Bridlington Central and Old Town ward.

The council's ruling Conservatives held two other seats in by-elections held on Thursday.

But UKIP's success in the resort was the main talking point.

Mr Milns already represents UKIP on Bridlington Town Council, along with his wife Thelma.

He said: "I am delighted with the result and very pleased for the people in UKIP's East Yorkshire branch, who have worked very hard to achieve this result.

"There are eight East Riding council seats in Bridlington and six of them are currently Conservative, but UKIP has won the past couple of elections here and I think the tide is starting to turn in our favour."

All three by-elections were triggered by the deaths of sitting councillors.

In Bridlington, the vacant seat was previously occupied by the late Social Democrat Ray Allerston.

UKIP's victory was also notable because the party had not even fielded a candidate there in the last full East Riding elections in 2011.

Conservative candidate Paul Copsey finished second, ahead of three Independents.

UKIP also came close in Howdenshire, where first- time Conservative candidate Nigel Wilkinson won with a narrow 129-vote majority over Clive Waddington.

The contest followed the death of sitting Conservative councillor Doreen Engall.

Mr Wilkinson, who runs his own management systems business, said: "I am pleased with the result.

"This was a new experience for me, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

"I have spent 30 years in the Army and the reserves and I felt it was time to put something back into the community in a different way."

The Willerby and Kirk Ella by-election followed the death of former Conservative councillor Angela Ibson.

In the highest turnout of the three contests, Conservative Mick Burchill secured a comfortable 823-vote majority over UKIP challenger Robert Skinner.

Mr Burchill, a semi-retired security consultant, said: "It was a good result and probably better than I expected.

"We put in a lot of hard work and went out campaigning the old-fashioned way, with loudspeakers on vans and talking to people in the streets.

"We also had some great banter with Dan Palmer, the Labour candidate."

The three by-elections were also notable for the absence of the Liberal Democrats on the ballot papers.

A mix-up over submitting nomination papers left Lab- our out of the picture in Bridlington Central and Old Town.

Analysis

THEY were the last elections before the big one next May.

As such, this week's three council by-elections in the East Riding offered a possible glimpse of what might lie ahead in the General Election and the local council elections scheduled for the same day.

The main talking point was UKIP's victory in the Bridlington Central and Old Town ward.

The result means Malcolm Milns has become the first UKIP councillor at County Hall and reflects the continuing surge in support for the party elsewhere.

For the council's ruling Conservative group, it was a mixed bag.

Holding two safe seats in Willerby and Kirk Ella and Howdenshire was achieved without much fuss, although UKIP did come within 129 votes of an upset in the latter.

Labour came third in both but a mix-up over the submission of nomination papers meant the party failed to field in candidate in Bridlington.

For their part, the Liberal Democrats did not appear on any of the ballot papers, suggesting a collapse in the party's internal bedrock of support.

The Lib Dems maintain a core of activists in Hull but, as the national polls suggest, they will face an uphill task next May. As for local Conservatives and Labour, they know UKIP now pose a serious threat to the political status quo.
