HUNDREDS gathered in Hessle this evening as Great British Bake Off winner Nancy Birtwhistle officially switched on the town's Christmas lights.
Mrs Birtwhistle was joined by Mayor of Hessle, Councillor David Prattley, Father Christmas and a host of schoolchildren for the switch on in the town square.
She said: "I am absolutely delighted to be here and switching on the Christmas lights, but I am also a little bit humbled.
"I lived here for 25 years and never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be turning on the Christmas lights.
"It is such a fantastic turnout."
Prior to the event Father Christmas handed out sweets to visitors and the crowds were entertained by performances from local schoolchildren.
Cllr Prattley said: "Every year we make the event bigger and better for the people of Hessle to enjoy."
