HE is one of the best-loved animals in Hull.

Now, George the iguana has a new female companion at his home in Pearson Park.

A three-year-old female iguana is the newest addition to the animals living in the park's conservatory.

She joins George, who is believed to be the country's oldest iguana at 16 years old.

He has been a favourite attraction of visitors for the past eight years.

Now, staff at the beauty spot want suggestions on what to call the new lizard – with Mildred being the favourite name so far.

Mike Tindall, of the Wyke Area Team, said: "People have really taken George to their hearts.

"The Pearson Park Trust saw how fond of him people are and how interested they are in the species, which is why it was decided to bring another into the fold.

"She is settling in absolutely fine and seems very happy."

Because of the territorial nature of iguanas, George and his new companion will never actually meet and there is no chance of a baby George making an appearance.

But that does not mean George isn't aware that a female has moved in.

Emma Wilson, 26, a wildlife ranger at Pearson Park, said: "They can't see each other as they are very territorial animals, but I can tell by George's body language he knows she is there. I think he can smell her.

"Her arrival will be absolutely stress-free for George, they are both going about their daily activity just fine.

"The visitors love her already.

"George has always been the star of the show, with people coming from all over just to see him, so it is great for them to come and see we have got another one.

"They are really interested in her.

"We have had a lot of suggestions for the names so far, but the favourite is Mildred, as in George and Mildred."

Both lizards are green iguanas, although due to George's age, his skin has turned orange.

Pearson Park Trust and the Wyke Area Team hope the pair of iguanas will attract even more visitors to the park, along with its tropical fish and Komodo dragons.

Mr Tindall said: "George attracts a lot of attention.

"We get a lot of schools who like visiting for their class projects.

"It is great knowing there are creatures here that people might not have seen before."

To enter the naming competition, visit the conservatory, write your suggestion on a piece of paper and hand it in.

The winner will be drawn out of a hat in the first week of December.
