POLICE have pledged to tackle burglars who target families over Christmas.

Officers say thieves are aware people have more high-value items in their homes at this time of year, ready to hand them over as gifts.

Inspector Duncan Collins, of Wyke and West neighbourhood policing team, is hoping to thwart the criminals' best-laid plans.

He is calling on members of the public to help the force in bringing burglars to justice.

He said: "It depends on exactly where you are, but we do often see a rise in burglaries around the festive period.

"The reason for that, of course, is because so many people have high-value gifts lying about in their houses.

"Sometimes they are left in garages, sheds and cars, too, and they can be easy pickings for criminals.

"We are committed to tackling this but we need the help from the public, too. We cannot do it all on our own."

The force is urging people to ensure they have their doors and windows locked at all times.

Insp Collins said: "The last thing we want to do is ruin people's Christmas spirit.

"But we are serious when we say these criminals will take advantage of anything they can.

"They want to steal. They want to make money and any easy opportunity they get, they will take.

"We want people to be extra careful over the next month or so when it comes to locking doors and locking windows.

"We would urge them to make sure any sheds and garages are also left secure.

"Even after doing that, we would urge people to try to keep Christmas presents out of sight. And that is the same for car keys and wallets.

"People must be responsible for their own homes and belongings. The more they are, the less crime there will be."

Throughout December, the force will deploy extra officers on the streets.

People indulging in more alcohol around this time can also lead to antisocial behaviour.

Despite there being problems, Insp Collins is keen to stress the majority of people in the city are law-abiding citizens.

He said: "We do not want people to feel intimidated because the majority are law-abiding.

"It is about getting the important message out there and getting the balance right. We want people to feel safe in their homes."

There will also be an increased police presence in popular shopping areas as the force aims to crack down on theft.

The force will work in partnership with security staff at large shopping centres throughout the city.

Insp Collins said: "Officers will be out on the beat and also in specific areas where we can respond quickly when needed.

"Criminals can operate in areas where there are large crowds of people.

"Again, we would urge people to be careful with the items they have purchased.

"Just like homeowners, it is vital people going out to do their Christmas shopping can get into the festive spirit. To do that, they need to feel safe."
