BOXER Luke Campbell's fighting spirit saw him glide through to the next stage of Dancing On Ice.

Although Hull's Olympic gold medalist lost a duel to Coronation Street actress Samia Ghadie, the public vote was enough to see him through.

He was the first to be told viewers had backed him all the way and he cheered and hugged professional skating partner Jenna Harrison.

Judge Robin Cousins said Luke was "strong, powerful and in control" on the ice as he performed to the soundtrack "This Is Love" by Will.I.Am.

But he had a battle on his hands with Samia, who is a favourite on the show and had come on leaps and bounds in training.

Luke and Jenna skated at the same time as Samia and partner Sylvain Longchambon. The couples wore bright red sparkly outfits, with Luke donning a tight tank top.

He tackled some tough moves, including an 'ecstasy lift', as the audience cheered him on.

The Hull champion called Samia a "tough cookie" and although he missed out on immunity, receiving no votes from the judges, he had the backing of his fans and TV viewers.

Once again, judge Jason Gardiner laid into Luke and said his performance was "Olympically bad", which sparked an argument between him and fellow judge Robin.

He attacked Luke's routine and said he didn't look like he was enjoying himself, but Luke managed to get Jason on the ropes, telling him he'd his "game face on".

Presenters Phillip Schofield and Christine Bleakley joined in the argument as the audience jeered.

Robin told Luke: "Your posture is exactly right for the skating you have been choreographed to do," while fellow judge Ashley Roberts said he did a "great job" on the night.

After the judges' verdict, Luke said: "I was listening to Jason's advice when he was speaking to Matt and Gareth, saying 'This is a duel, you want to knock each other out', you have to have a hard face and no emotion, that's what a duel is."

Luke also addressed comments Jason made in week one, calling him a "weak, feeble boy" after performing to Gold Forever.

"I don't know where he got that from," he said. "Ask my 140 boxing opponents whether I'm strong or not."

He also tweeted during the show saying: "Jason and I are just getting warmed up haha."

Ahead of the show, Luke was said to be worried about going up against Samia because she didn't have to worry about lifting her partner.

He told the press: "I do think it's harder than going head-to-head with another guy, because then you are both on the same level playing field."

But despite losing out to the beauty, he said Samia was a "lovely person" and he was "really happy" for her as she escaped the public vote.

Celebrity pals also supported the gold medalist on Twitter and Radio One DJ Scott Mills even sat in the audience to cheer him on.

He tweeted: "At Dancing On Ice to support my mate Luke Campbell, make sure you vote."

Watch Luke on Dancing On Ice this Sunday from 6.15pm on ITV1.
