Paul Heaton has resigned as patron of Sheffield United Community Foundation after the club allowed convicted rapist Ched Evans to train with them.
Mr Heaton, who lived in Hull for 20 years and famously formed the Housemartins and the Beautiful South, said he regretted the decision but believed Evans should not be allowed to return to the club he "let down".
He is the fourth patron to resign over the club's decision.
Jessica Ennis-Hill last week spoke out against the club's decision and asked for her name to be removed from a stand at Bramall Lane.
Evans was jailed in April 2012 for raping a 19-year-old woman in a hotel room in May 2011, having been found guilty by a jury at Caernarfon Crown Court.
Television presenter Charlie Webster, musician Dave Berry and school food and health adviser Lindsay Graham, resigned as club patrons last week.
In a statement, Mr Heaton said: "It is with great regret that I announce my resignation as patron of Sheffield United Community Foundation.
"I would firstly like to salute the bravery of my fellow Blades and patrons in resigning their positions and in particular Charlie Webster, Jessica Ennis-Hill and Lindsay Graham, in standing up for victims of rape everywhere.
"I firmly believe that Ched Evans has the right to rebuild his career in football, but rebuilding a career should not involve walking straight out of prison and into the shirt of the club he so badly let down.
"I believe he needs to move away and move on, and the club itself needs to lift its reputation out of the gutter.
"I would like to thank the foundation for its continued hard work in the Sheffield community and wish them the very best for the future."
Heaton will now donate his takings from a gig in Sheffield to a local rape charity.
He said: "As a way of showing a lead to others involved in this torrid affair, I will be donating my fee from this month's Sheffield City Hall gig to Sheffield Rape Crisis Centre."
The club said it had allowed Evans to train following a request from the Professional Footballers' Association.
At his trial, Evans admitted having sex with the woman but denied rape. The former Wales international was freed last month after serving half of a five-year jail sentence.
Evans has scored 59 goals in 167 appearances during spells with Manchester City, Norwich City and Sheffield United.
