I'm A Celebrity: Jungle Jimmy Bullard faces underwater Bushtucker trial

Former footballer Jimmy Bullard showed his nerves are as brittle as his knees last night as he made his debut on I'm A Celebrity.

The midfield maestro, who conveniently forgot he'd played for Hull City during his introduction on the reality show, made a damp squib - or is that squid? – of his first big test during the Slipper Critters challenge which saw him and former beer model Melanie Sykes deposited on a beach and expected to rummage through a crate of unholy slimy creatures for their supper.

While Sykes shone in the task, Bullard winced and looked as uncomfortable as a man in studded underpants during the challenge, hardly endearing himself to the watching millions.

Apparently you can beat a bit of Bully, quite easily, if you're girl.

Bullard's hardly heroic performance baited the voters at home, who love to give a celebrity a good kicking when they're down, by nominating the Londoner to do the second Bushtucker trial, which will see him plunged into an underwater tunnel filled with sea life critters, a task many commentators believe is second only in ghastliness to being signed by Ipswich.

Whether Bullard's knees will be able to take the stress of floating effortlessly in a container surrounded by salt water is still unclear, although it is believed producers have an ambulance on standby should he suddenly need to take three months off.

All bets are now off as to who will be crowned King of Queen Of the Jungle, as former bookies' favorite Bullard stumbles at the first hurdle. He's no doubt hoping the next challenge is jumping over a load of hurdles.

• The second episode of I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here is on ITV tonight at 9pm.
