Police arrest man, 22, over fire at newsagent's in Spring Bank, Hull

Police have arrested a 22-year-old man in connection with a fire at a newsagent's shop in Spring Bank, Hull, this morning. Firefighters rushed to rescue nine people from a flat above TK News at around 8.15am today. Two people were taken to Hull Royal Infirmary. The 22-year-old man is in police custody on suspicion of conspiracy to commit arson. Police said there will be a strong presence in the Spring Bank area this evening. Detective Inspector Nick Ram said: "One man has been arrested following a suspicious fire at a shop on Spring Bank in Hull. "Additional uniformed police officers are now patrolling in the area to help reassure the local community following the incident."
Police were unable to explain the exact circumstances behind the blaze but that it is not believed to be racially motivated. A police spokeswoman said a man had suffered an arm injury after he jumped from a window and another person was treated for minor burns. Yorkshire Ambulance Service earlier told the Mail a man had suffered a serious head injury. A number of other people suffered minor effects from smoke inhalation but were not seriously hurt. Humberside Police and Humberside Fire and Rescue Service are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire. Last month when a "lit item" was thrown at the doorway of TK News. And on Monday this week, police were called to the property following reports of an attempted burglary. It is not clear whether either of these incidents is linked to today's fire. Detectives at Humberside Police are appealing for further information from the public. Call 101, referring to log 184 of November 15.
