NEW figures reveal the National Lottery has invested more than £136m in projects in Hull in the 20 years since the first draw.

A total of 1,295 grants have been awarded to individuals and organisations in the city, helping to change lives and transform communities.

The largest grant was almost £23m to help create The Deep.

Colin Brown, chief executive at The Deep, said: "The National Lottery has had a massive effect on Hull over the years.

"It has been one of the most empowering and democratic changes to everyday lives in this country that I can remember.

"It has given anyone with a passion for providing for their community a chance to access funding.

"Over the past two decades, the lottery has provided thousands more winners than just those lucky enough to pick the right numbers."

The first grant to the city was £1,750 for a toy library for the Childminders' Association. The smallest grant has been £831 to enable St Mary's College in north Hull to start an after-school football club.

Other lottery-funded projects in the area have included the restoration of East Park and the development of Hull History Centre.

Councillor Martin Mancey, the city council's portfolio holder for economic regeneration, said: "We welcome any funding to the city as it provides the opportunity to bring to life a number of exciting projects, including the History Centre, restoration of East Park and The Deep, to name a few.

"The investment so far has created a range of jobs and training opportunities within various sectors supporting our aims of improving our city for local people and increasing our local economy spend.

"It also encourages further investment from other funding streams, which plays an important part in the progression of our vibrant and sustainable city. Our future public realm transformation and Fruit Market plans will continue to increase the attractiveness of the city further and will work towards achieving our aim of becoming a world-class visitor destination."

Meanwhile, a total of 282 individuals in the HU postcode area have won prizes of more than £50,000, with 30 becoming millionaires.
