MATT Fawcett has stepped down from his role as head coach of Hull Wasps following a tough start to the season.

The Wasps are currently rooted to the bottom of Division Three North having suffered defeats in all three of their opening league fixtures.

The 25-year-old cited personal reasons for quitting the role, which he has held for the past three seasons, but added that he would continue to play.

"I am leaving my position to pursue my professional development," said Fawcett.

"I also need to get back my love for playing and want to concentrate on that.

"I am proud to have achieved what I have.

"I have loved it and I'm very sad to be stepping down but I'd like to thank the players, staff and especially the fans for all their support."

Fawcett led the club to promotion from Division Four last season, a feat that landed him the runner up spot in the coach of the year award.

Fawcett will continue in his role as Director of Basketball, while assistant James Coulson will take charge of the team while the Wasps search for a new head coach.

Club chairman Dave Bushnell added his own thanks to Fawcett for his work over the past three seasons.

"I'd like to thank Matt for the hours of dedication, enthusiasm and hard work," said Bushnell.

"We still have a great opportunity to push on and develop in Division Three. It's a great opportunity for a new coach to come in and take us forward."
