Matty Beharrell: 'I wasn't given a proper chance at Hull KR'

MATTY Beharrell admits he was disappointed to leave Hull KR in the way he did, but is determined to kick-start his career at Gateshead. Beharrell, who was nominated for Championship One's player of the season, is the latest to leave KR as coach Chris Chester rebuilds his squad for next season. The 21-year-old scrum-half feels he wasn't given a proper chance to impress the coaching team during his time at the Robins. Having spent the majority of last season playing for Gateshead, the playmaker has signed for the North East club, knowing ex-KR man Stanley Gene will help him develop his career further. "I am disappointed to have left Rovers," Beharrell told the Mail. "I wasn't given a proper opportunity to play and found myself playing for Gateshead every week. "I didn't enjoy training at Rovers knowing I wasn't going to be involved in the games at the weekend. "I thought I might have got another shot, even last season. "But it didn't come and I knew my release was on the cards, but it still doesn't make it any easier to take. "I could have stayed at Rovers next season, but I couldn't see things changing for me, so it's best for me to go now while I have the chance to join Gateshead. "I've learned so much from my time at Gateshead last season under Stanley Gene and it will be great going back to a club and coach who know me. "Exciting things are happening at Gateshead and I'm delighted to be a part of it. We made the play-offs last season when nobody really expected us to." When he joined the KR senior squad on their warm weather training camp, Beharrell was confident of making the grade, but it failed to materialise. He has one Super League game to his name, but it's one he would rather forget. Three days after Rovers had beaten Hull 23-10 at the KC Stadium, Rovers then coach Craig Sandercock made wholesale changes to his squad including handing Beharrell his debut against Wigan at home. However, the Warriors handed the Robins an 84-6 record club defeat – and Beharrell was never seen in a KR shirt again. It was a brutal experience for the youngster who wants redemption one day. "The Wigan game wasn't the best experience for me," Beharrell said. "I was way off in terms of being ready to play, but I was selected anyway. "It told me where I needed to be and from then on I knew I had to get tougher. "That wasn't the real me and I want another chance to play in Super League to show what I'm capable of. "Stanley knows what I'm capable of and he gives me the confidence to go out and play the way I want to play. "I'm enjoying my rugby now and long may that continue."
