A MAN who bit part of his victim's ear off in a "vicious and sustained" attack has been jailed for nine years.

Nathan Blakeley, 24, smirked as he was led to the cells after being branded a "dangerous" offender, who posed a "significant risk" to the public.

A jury found Blakeley guilty of wounding Khalid Mohammad Omar with intent and common assault following a trial at Hull Crown Court.

Recorder Abdul Iqbal QC told him: "You carried out an assault upon the complainant which can only be described as vicious and sustained.

"You took him to the ground, you punched him, he went to the floor, you punched him again, you bit him, you gave him at least six more punches, you bit his arm, you bit his knuckles, then you bit a substantial portion of his ear completely away.

"There is clearly a significant risk to members of the public of serious harm from you."

Mr Omar, who now wears a prosthetic ear piece to hide his permanent disfigurement, said the attack has "destroyed" his life.

Blakeley attacked Mr Omar outside a hostel in St Leonard's Road, off Beverley Road, after an all-night drinking binge with friends, on January 8, this year.

In the early hours of the morning, Blakeley and his friends had been rowdy and aggressive towards Mr Omar, who had repeatedly asked them to be quiet because he was trying to sleep.

As Mr Omar ate his breakfast, Blakeley hit him over the head with a beer bottle and left the hostel. When Mr Omar left the hostel, Blakeley attacked him in the street and bit a "large portion" of his ear clean off.

In a victim impact statement, Mr Omar said he felt like a "handicapped person" and was depressed and emotional when he left the house.

The statement said: "I suffer from a lack of sleep during the night because of the pain and thinking about my injury.

"I am isolated from my friends and people I know because I feel less than them.

"I don't feel confident meeting new people because part of my ear is missing. I have no social life any more."

Blakeley has a string of dishonesty and violent offences dating back to 2007, including assault occasioning actual bodily harm – which involved him biting a man's nose in a beer garden.

He was also convicted in 2011 for the same offence for pushing his ex-girlfriend over after seeing her kissing another man in a bar.

She hit her head on the kerb and was knocked unconscious.

In 2014, Blakeley was convicted of affray for punching and headbutting a man in a takeaway.

The use of his teeth in the attack against Mr Omar was classed as using a weapon.

A pre-sentence report described Blakeley as posing a "high risk of significant harm" to the public, in particular young men of a similar age to him.

Sentencing Blakeley to nine years in jail, with an extended four years on licence, Recorder Iqbal said he had shown no remorse.

"You are a man who has shown violence in the past, you have a series of previous convictions," he said.

"They show a tendency on your part to resort to serious violence whenever you prefer to use it."

Blakeley was also given two months in jail for the common assault charge, which related to him hitting Mr Omar over the head with the beer bottle, to run concurrently with the nine-year sentence.
