Luke Campbell v Daniel Brizuela: Favourite tag won't faze Hull star

AS HULL City Hall bustles with energy ahead of a pre-match press conference, a lonely figure stands out when nestled in a quiet corner.

With deals between promoters being made and boxing stories being shared by fighters, Luke Campbell looks the personification of calm away from the hum.

With himself for company and his headphones on, the Olympic champion's quiet demeanour is only briefly betrayed by a steely look of determination as he takes himself away from the crowd.

"I'm just taking it easy," he quips from the comfort of his seat.

Campbell has seen plenty of razzmatazz already both in his amateur and professional days.

It's making a noise tomorrow night with his performance against Daniel Brizuela which is his only focus.

Having faced fighter after fighter who have arrived with the mantra of doing the opposite of fighting, Campbell is looking forward to finally facing someone who will take a step forward.

It will bring the best out of him. And he knows it.

"I think you will see a better Luke Campbell tomorrow night, because he's coming to win," explained Campbell.

"So far I've fought awkward opponents who are always running, who don't want to get involved or box. They are awkward to fight against.

"They make the fights scrappy and, for the fans, they make them unattractive to watch.

"With his style and my style, I think we will gel nicely and I know I am going to hit him with some clean shots.

"He will give me the opportunity to showcase my skills and will give me the chance to be the best I can be."

The most successful amateur boxer Great Britain has ever produced, Campbell is already well on his way to similar success as a professional.

To the casual boxing fan, it could be perceived he has been put in front of a procession of bums, such has been the emphatic way he has built his eight-fight unbeaten record.

That's not the case. There may have been many mismatches along the way, but that's what happens when you put an Olympic champion up against boxers who simply cannot live with both his pace and accuracy.

Scott Moises is as durable as they come and he was stopped by Campbell at the Hull Arena in February. Krzysztof Szot had only been stopped once in 34 fights, against a light-welterweight, but went the same way as Moises in the Olympian's last bout.

In eight contests only two boxers have gone the distance with the gold medalist, and they were over shorter distances. It's been a comfortable introduction to the professional ranks, but that's all about to change.

Brizuela may still be the big underdog when he steps into the ring tomorrow night, but there's no doubting the Argentinian's technical ability or desire to win.

In his 12-round epic with Tommy Coyle in February this year, the man who is usually a super-featherweight underlined the danger he poses.

And Campbell is well aware that this is his first real examination.

"This is my biggest test, but I am very confident," explained Campbell, in a manner that leaves no room to question his belief.

"Brizuela is a tough opponent, he likes working on the inside and can move and box, so it's going to be a tough test.

"But I've prepared the best I can and I go in there very confident of getting the job done. I'm ready to do whatever needs to be done tomorrow."

Campbell says he's not studied Brizuela's battle with Coyle, keeping the focus on himself. It's a confidence which underlined his Olympic belief and has set him on a path to potential world glory.

A comprehensive win against Brizuela will certainly propel him a step closer to the ultimate aim, and not least a mega-fight with Coyle at the KC Stadium next summer.

After Coyle's tough time in putting Brizuela away, Campbell knows the opportunity is there to make a statement, but he says there's no rush on his part for an early finish.

"The fight lasts as long as it takes," he adds. "If it is a breakdown job, then that's what it is. I'm prepared to go 10 rounds no problem and I've just come off a good eight-round fight win against a durable guy, so I can go 10 rounds. If it ends before then great, but I'm not rushing it.

"Brizuela is no mug at all. He showed that in the Coyle fight. But I believe in myself and that I will do the business come tomorrow night."

With that, the Olympic champion rises from his seat and rejoins the circus as the press conference bravado begins.
