It's a tale of intrigue, murder, corruption and conspiracy – and it could be set in Hull if the producers of a new web TV series manage to raise enough funding.

Humber City, set in a murky future world where cyber crime is running riot, is the subject of a new online crowd-funding initiative whose organiser hopes to raise £12,500 to make the series a reality.

And writer/director and producer Peter Goundrill has recruited a variety of actors from cult TV shows such as Star Trek and Doctor Who to appear in the show, if the internet-based sci-fi community can stump up the cash.

Peter, a 27-year-old Hull School of Arts and Design film graduate, attempted to get his "passion project" off the ground in 2012, but failed to reach the level of funding required.

But, undeterred by the setback, the fledgling filmmaker has retooled his gritty detective drama and shot it forward into the future – Hull in the year 2064, to be exact.

Peter has a deadline of Friday, November 14, to raise the money through the Indiegogo crowd-funding website and is hoping Hull may have some sci-fi fans with deep pockets, willing to give the show a chance.

Peter, who has previously worked on fan-made Star Trek web series, says he is desperate to make the show in his hometown.

He said: "I still feel really strongly about making the show in this city, especially now we're the UK City of Culture for 2017.

"I want to show that this is a city where people can create something that is uniquely Hull and show off how much creativity and imagination there is here.

"I want to tell a great northern story, set in Hull, and now it's got the added element of having a sci-fi twist."

Among cast members Peter has recruited for his series are Simon Fisher-Becker, who played blue-skinned alien Dorium Maldovar in Doctor Who, and US Star Trek: Voyager alumni Tim Russ and Manu Intiraymi.

Film-maker Peter says he has spent years networking at film and sci-fi conventions, promoting the possibilities of Humber City to potential investors.

He said: "I met Simon Fisher-Becker at the Geeks Unleashed convention in Cleethorpes and I showed him the concept and pre-production work we'd done on the show. He was blown away by it and agreed to come on board.

"Now it's just a case of getting the word out and trying to raise the money to make it a reality.

"We're aiming to raise £12,500 to get the initial episodes off the ground.

The plot line for the series is a closely guarded secret, but Peter says Humber City is a "futuristic thriller" set in Hull, 50 years from now.

He said: "The response so far has been fantastic.

"The show's set in a world where technology and crime have become so intertwined that they need a special team to deal with it.

"It's a conspiracy where nothing is as it seems and there are many threads all intertwined.

"We want to shoot as much of the series in Hull as possible because the city's a character in its own right.

"We want to do for Hull what Doctor Who has done for Cardiff."
