ONE of the calendar highlights for Hull has been and gone for another year but the memories will last a lifetime. Tens of thousands of fun-lovers flocked to Hull Fair throughout the week to enjoy their annual fill of fun, music and laughter. But while some said the thrills of the rides and winning prizes was their highlight, for many it was the vast selection of fairground food that kept them coming back for more. Queues of hungry fair-goers lined the famous Bob Carver's fish and chip stall, while the sweet-toothed stopped off for their annual fix of brandy snap. Melanie Pullen, 44, of Wright and Co's sweet stall, has been going to the fair all her life. "I was born into it," she said. "The atmosphere on a night time, when the music is going and the lights are flashing, is amazing. "I am looking forward to coming back next year." Despite the weather getting off to a bad start, it dried out in time for the weekend and any loss of trade was more than compensated for. Ms Pullen said: "It does all depend on the weather because when it rained on Monday people didn't come out but apart from that it has been excellent." Hailed the world's largest travelling fair, this year there were 250 rides and 113 stalls. New for thrill-seekers was Dream Live, a ride which rotates at speeds of up to 60mph. Then there were the more traditional rides, like the waltzers. Carly Atha, of Atha's Hell Blazer, has been coming to Hull Fair for as long as she can remember. She said: "It has been just as good as every year and when it has been sunny, it has been great. "It is a great week where we not only make money but get to meet up with friends." Rival waltzer operator Farrar Shaw, of Razmataz, is part of five generations of Hull Fair operators. He said: "We love it. It has such a buzz and we have taken a roaring trade as we do every year." The fair was enjoyed by families, teenagers, children and pensioners alike. Rich Kemp, 36, took his three-year-old daughter Dorothy and girlfriend Kelly Hall, 36. He said: "It has been loads of fun and Dorothy has loved it. "We all love the food the most." Janet and Geoff Skipsey watched their grandchildren Caitlin, 13, and Freddie, four, zoom round on the rides, bringing back memories of their own childhood visits to the fair. Mrs Skipsey said: "We used to go on all the rides but now we just get some brandy snaps. "It seems a lot bigger this year." Georgia Puckering, 22, and Liam Drydale, 25, took their children Harlee, four, and Shaibella, eight months. "We love the food the most," said Georgia. "It has been the best year yet."
