Police say an initiative to keep city youngsters on the straight and narrow is proving a success.
Children aged 11 to 16 who show signs of slipping into a world of criminal activity are being encouraged to get involved in community activities such as sports, gardening and cooking.
The Mighty Acorns scheme is into its second year and is now showing signs of making a real difference.
The scheme currently has more than 100 children taking part across the city, with particular success in the North Carr area, which covers Bransholme and Kingswood.
PC Pete Dawson said: "We are really starting to see signs that children are taking in the message that crime is not the way forward.
"The idea is to engage with children in the more socially deprived areas of the city and give them a direction in life.
"More often than not, these young offenders are getting into trouble because they have very little to do. That is a great shame.
"But when they are given the opportunity to play football, to channel their aggression in boxing or learn how to cook, they calm down because their free time is suddenly occupied by worthwhile activities.
"It is a chance for them to meet new friends and get out and about. It gives them something to look forward to.
"The children are then given the opportunity for further development after the project has finished, so they can use their experience and skills in the community and also the workplace."
The project targets children who become involved in petty crime or a gang culture. Crimes have included verbal abuse in the streets and criminal damage.
PC Dawson said: "Often the early signs are children hanging on street corners in small gangs.
"They may be causing a bit of bother to other residents by acting antisocially or swearing in the street.
"The problem comes when that starts progressing to petty theft and then perhaps criminal damage.
"This is why the project is so crucial. We need to prevent children from going into adulthood and being a criminal."
The project helps in the running of small youth groups, which are all committed to tackling antisocial behaviour in their neighbourhoods.
Across each of the city's seven policing areas, a neighbourhood officer is assigned to helping groups under the scheme.
PC Dawson said: "We monitor how these groups are operating and some of the success that is being generated has been great.
"There are a number of groups and volunteers in the Bransholme area in particular that have made a huge difference.
"It is not just the police committed to tackling crime and antisocial behaviour, because we work very hard alongside community volunteers and other partners to secure funding for the activities. It is a real team effort.
"A lot of the time we come across children who don't even know they are necessarily doing something wrong. That is because they haven't been educated.
"The most difficult part of the job is knowing you can never beat crime completely. Not everyone is going to listen to what you are saying.
"But that is more than made up by the fact that more and more children are learning how to steer clear from a life of crime.
"The less people we have sliding into crime, the better."
Police are appealing for more children to get involved in the project.
